The position reports directly to the Sergeant i/c of Member Support Unit (MSU), who is aligned under the S/Sgt/ i/c Employee and Family Assistance Section (EFAS) within Human Resources Division and is responsible for the role of executing the programs and providing supports that align with the Member Support Unit Program of the Edmonton Police Service (EPS). The nature of the work requires direct involvement in the emotional, psychological, and organizational support of both sworn and non-sworn employees who find themselves in personal, professional, relationship, psychological, emotional, or financial distress. This will include triage which can lead to providing immediate crisis support as well as risk-effective decision making to ensure the employees immediate safety needs are met. This can also include the potential referral of employees to outside service providers as appropriate.
Responsibilities include:
- Function as the first point of contact for employees experiencing crises who are attempting to access assistance via the EPS. Provides timely support from a peer perspective to members experiencing crises. This may include suicide intervention.
- Initiates and coordinates appropriate referrals on a case-by-case basis, understanding that confidentiality is top priority.
- Respond to ongoing email, phone, or personal contact in a follow-up capacity with individual employees and work areas, as necessary.
- Function as a liaison with other areas within the EPS for members who are experiencing psychological stress, work-related stress, family related stress, and /or substance abuse issues.
- Consult with Clinical Consulting Psychologist and refer to psychologists from the EPS Preferred Providers List (PPL).
- Function as a liaison with external areas and partners of EPS including the Edmonton Police Service Family Association (EPSFA), Wounded Warriors, Legacy Place. Act as a representative of the EPS Wellness Branch in requests from other public safety agencies.
- Assistance to Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)/Peer Support Coordinator, as necessary. Required to take over responsibility of CISM Coordinator to cover for short periods of time as needed.
- Contact members one-on-one in a CISM capacity and function as a support within a group CISM debriefing as required.
- Collection of data, reporting and recommendation of strategies on a case by case and/or organizational basis regarding MSU issues.
- Prepare presentation material and instruct on the aspects of MSU and CISM as requested, including but not limited to recruit classes supervisors' course, initial commander course, etc.
- May be required to obtain ‘trainer' status within the "The Working Mind First Responders (TWMFR)" program or other MSU lead programs; lead and assist in its delivery to the EPS.
- Prepare presentation material and instruct on the aspects of MSU and CISM as requested, including but not limited to recruit classes, supervisors' course, initial commander course.
- Assist in identifying, developing, or supporting new or established programs within MSU and the Employee and Organizational Wellness Branch with the goal of equipping EPS members to take ownership of their own wellness. May have to cover for Sergeant in a temporary T/A capacity as needed including on call responsibilities as required by unit.
- Develop proactive programs and initiatives surrounding member/family wellness and support.
- Other related duties as required.
