Are you ready to make a meaningful impact in Edmonton's  urban development? Join our team as a Senior Development Engineer, where you'll play a crucial role in shaping the city's infrastructure.

Reporting to the General Supervisor, the Senior Development Engineer in Development Engineering and Drawing Review(DEDR) is an expert responsible for overseeing the regulatory review and acceptance of private development designs submitted to the City of Edmonton by engineering consultants and developers, primarily for drainage infrastructure and related systems. This role involves assisting in workload planning, organizing, directing, and providing technical oversight to project engineers, development engineers, and engineering technologists. The Senior Development Engineer will facilitate clear communication with external engineering consultants, developers, EPCOR, government agencies, citizens, and City of Edmonton internal stakeholders. Additionally, the position involves administering the implementation process for drainage servicing in land development projects conducted under Servicing Agreements between the City and private land developers.

What will you do?

  • Review private land developers' consultant designs for compliance with Federal and Provincial Acts and Regulations, City Bylaws, Policies & Standards, approved Structure Plans, and servicing schemes
  • Recommend acceptance of consultant engineering drawings that comply with all requirements, including Volume 3 Drainage Design and Construction standards
  • Review and decide on non-standard design proposals from developers and their engineering consultants including evaluating the impacts of those designs on landscaping and transportation elements
  • Sign Utility Right-of-Way and Restrictive Covenant documents for final approval by the General Supervisor
  • Oversee the circulation of detailed engineering design plans for private development projects, ensuring performance targets for review comments are met
  • Complete Annual Alberta Environment EPEA reports and maps for completed subdivision designs
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, developers, consultants, and other agencies regarding sewer servicing options and land development matters. Collaborate to find solutions or design variances when city standards cannot be met
  • Contribute to updating drainage servicing standards and developing policies, guidelines, and processes
  • Prepare and authenticate reports and responses for senior management, City Council, and other departments regarding land servicing issues
  • Mentor and evaluate a team of professional and technical staff, including development engineers and engineering technologists. Lead the hiring process for new team members
  • Explore and document emerging design and construction best practices, standards, and technologies that are applicable to drainage
  • Review and approve circulations and requests from other city departments and agencies. Represent drawing review  unit in committees and stakeholder meetings
  • Assist the General Supervisor/Director in continuous improvement projects and other group-led initiatives
