The City of Edmonton's Legal Services Branch acts as a full-service law firm for the City, which employs over 10,000 employees and has a total budget in excess of $1.2 billion. Virtually all legal work for the City is handled in-house by Legal Services Branch lawyers. As a summer student with the City of Edmonton, you will have an opportunity to work in multiple areas covered by the Legal Services Branch, including:
- Commercial and real estate transactions
- Finance and investment advising
- Public-private partnerships
- Expropriation law
- Bylaw drafting
- Intellectual property law
- Tendering and procurement
- Corporate structure and governance issues
- Personal injury litigation
- Real property litigation
- Construction litigation
- Bylaw challenges, enforcement and prosecutions
- Assessment and taxation; and
- Human resources and employment advising/hearings
Throughout the summer you will be assigned various tasks under the supervision of our lawyers. You will find that the lawyers in the Branch have an open-door policy, and are willing to spend time with students to assist and direct them.
