Are you passionate about preserving and enhancing Edmonton's urban forest? We are looking for a dedicated Urban Forester to join the City Operations team in Parks and Urban Forestry. In this role, you will be an administrator for tree maintenance programs, ensure policies and bylaws related to public trees are followed, ensure the long-term health and sustainability of our city's valuable tree canopy. This is a dynamic position that involves a blend of field work and office work. If you are an ISA certified arborist with experience in arboriculture including pruning, have a strong understanding of urban forestry and tree care practices and have excellent communication skills, we encourage you to apply and help us grow a greener Edmonton.
An Urban Forester on the tree maintenance team is responsible for supporting the administration of a comprehensive tree maintenance program for approximately 400,000 open space and boulevard trees on City property. Key responsibilities in this role are responding to 311 notifications, tree risk assessments and tracking, implementing tree maintenance plans and ensuring that all work is inspected.
The position requires a dedicated professional with a commitment to staying current on new innovations and research in urban forestry. Knowledge of environmental regulations and policies related to tree maintenance is essential in this role. Passion for arboriculture and a commitment to safety protocols are key values essential in this role.
What will you do?
Conduct tree risk assessments to identify potential hazards and prioritize maintenance needs
Respond to 311 notifications related to tree maintenance
Implement tree maintenance plans and monitor the effectiveness of the program
Oversee pruning and tree removal efforts to reduce the risk of critical pests and disease
Work collaboratively with other urban foresters, urban forestry leaders, arborists and forest technicians to ensure the overall health and resilience of the urban forest
Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and policies related to tree maintenance and tree conservation
Performing tree maintenance inspections for in house crews and contractors
Conduct regular safety inspections
Make recommendations for improvement of tree maintenance programs
Manage recoverable projects and supervise tree work contracts for pruning and removals and other tree maintenance activities.
Administer contracts, review tender specifications, and approve invoices for payment
Assist in the mentorship and training of Landscape Technician I staff.
Respond to inquiries from City Councilors, management, and the public regarding tree issues and policies.
