The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated Urban Forester to join our team. In this dynamic role, you will be a key steward of Edmonton's public trees, ensuring their health, protection, and sustainability through expert consultation, policy adherence, and community engagement. An Urban Forester with the City of Edmonton is responsible for the administration and adherence to key City policies and bylaws related to public trees, including the Corporate Tree Management Policy 456C and Public Tree Bylaw 18825. This role primarily acts as a tree consultant for various projects impacting City trees, offering expertise from the design phase through to construction completion. You will work with diverse groups to develop and implement tree protection and preservation plans, and review tree permit requirements. Urban Foresters also serve as the legal voice of Forestry for investigations, producing tree value reports, and ensuring compliance with the City of Edmonton Volume 5 Landscape Standards for new and replacement public tree plantings.
What will you do?
- Administer and ensure adherence to the City of Edmonton Corporate Tree Management Policy 456C, Public Tree Bylaw 18825, Community Standards Bylaw #14600, and the Natural Areas Policy as they relate to all public trees
- Provide expert tree consultation for projects impacting City trees, including tree valuations, evaluations, construction projects, and design reviews
- Develop, implement, and follow-up on construction plans to ensure all tree protection/preservation requirements are met and review tree permit requirements
- Conduct investigations and produce tree value reports for the Edmonton Police Service, Risk Management, and uninsured claims involving trees
- Inspect and facilitate the City of Edmonton Volume 5 Landscape Standards for new and replacement public tree plantings, including acceptance and rejection of trees on Forestry driven projects
- Assess and maintain special projects, collaborating with the Natural Areas Coordinator and Landscape Technician for Naturalization on natural tree stands and naturalized areas
- Act as a contract administrator and inspector for contract pruning, watering, and tree planting/transplanting tenders, including developing specifications, assisting with bid evaluations, and supervising for compliance
- Coordinate and perform tree risk assessments and manage tree hazards using best management practices in natural areas, boulevards, and parks
- Encourage and implement new methodologies for caring for municipal trees, staying up-to-date on new innovations and research
- Effectively communicate work processes, maintaining high accountability to internal departments and private industry
- Educate and communicate the benefits of trees, a healthy Urban Forest, tree protection, and preservation to private and public communities
- Develop and implement strong educational campaigns related to City policies, tailoring messaging to various demographics
- Respond to inquiries from Councillors and administration regarding tree issues
- Provide comments on designs for various internal projects, development projects, and ULA designs
