The City of Edmonton is seeking a dedicated, collaborative, and detailed-oriented Engineering Technologist III to join our Safe Mobility team within the Parks and Road Services branch. In this role, you will play a vital part in managing on-street traffic controls and parking solutions to build a safe, reliable, and accessible transportation network for all modes of travel. You will apply technical expertise to evaluate traffic operations, design signage and pavement markings, update bylaws, and support key municipal projects. Working alongside cross-functional teams, you will help turn technical guidelines and engineering principles into practical safety solutions across Edmonton. What will you do?

• Evaluate and analyze city-wide traffic operational issues involving all modes of travel and parking based on national standards, local guidelines, and best practices
• Collaborate with roadway designers, project managers, and engineering consultants to design, develop, and finalize permanent signage and pavement marking plans
• Conduct technical studies, site visits, and field inspections to collect data, review road safety conditions, and issue work orders for installation
• Supervise engineering technologists, including recruitment, coaching/counseling, monitoring performance, and providing feedback. Lead and mentor the team of technicians, overseeing the design, placement, and installation of traffic control devices
• Lead updates for procedures, manuals, and bylaws, including Traffic Bylaw 5590 and Speed Zones Bylaw 6894
• Lead team members responding to inquiries related to traffic engineering issues from internal and external stakeholders, the general public, City Council, industry representatives, regulatory bodies, media, and other municipalities
• Support staff in reviewing and and determining posted speed limits and complete railway crossing evaluations in coordination with rail partners and Transport Canada
• Provide clear, responsive, and professional communication regarding operational inquiries from internal teams, City Council, media, and engagement participants
• Provide supervision, technical direction, and mentorship to junior technologists, staff, and students

Qualifications

• Completion of a two (2) year diploma in an appropriate Engineering Technology program
• A minimum of five (5) years of related hands-on experience in traffic operations, traffic control design, or transportation engineering
• Eligibility for certification as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET)

Assets:

• Registered C.E.T. designation with ASET
• Direct experience reviewing or developing municipal traffic bylaws, speed zone regulations, and operational safety procedures
• Hands-on experience working with 311 systems or municipal public query response workflows

Skills required for success:

• Technical Expertise: Considerable knowledge of transportation engineering principles, pavement markings, permanent signage, and relevant municipal bylaws/regulations
• Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with internal collaborators, contractors, and engagement participants
• Problem-Solving & Decision Making: Proven ability to analyze complex field conditions, evaluate safety impacts, and apply sound engineering judgment
• Leadership & Supervision: Strong mentorship abilities to guide, train, and support junior staff and students
• Digital Literacy: Proficiency with specialized engineering and drafting tools, spreadsheet modeling, and project management software

Conditions of Employment:

• Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
• Use of a personal vehicle for City business (with mileage reimbursement) or ability to operate municipal fleet vehicles
• Willingness to perform physical field inspections across various outdoor environments and weather conditions

Work Environment:

• A hybrid combination of standard office work, indoor collaborative team environments, and periodic outdoor site visits
• Outdoor field inspections may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, traffic environments, and construction sites requiring appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
