Waste Services plays an essential role in Edmonton's City Plan by enhancing residents' livability and supporting Climate Resilience. Our goal is to demonstrate leadership and provide support to residents, businesses and institutions to act as stewards of the environment. By promoting waste prevention, waste reduction, reuse of materials and circular economy initiatives, Waste Services contributes to the City's Corporate outcomes and the goals established in the 25-year Waste Strategy. This is overlaid with the commitment to maintaining stable and consistent utility rates ensuring services are continually improved and optimized to provide value for Edmontonians.
Reporting to the Branch Manager, Waste Services, the Director of Business Integration and Technical Services is a strategic leadership role responsible for driving the integration of advanced technical solutions, business strategy and performance excellence. The role acts as a bridge between technical execution and the City's objectives, leveraging data-driven insights, fostering strategic partnerships, and cultivating a culture of accountability and continuous improvement to meet the immediate and long-term needs of the City and Edmontonians.
With five direct reports and over 100 staff, the Director leads a multi-disciplinary team responsible for waste strategy and policy, technical services and engineering, business and financial planning, asset management, and outreach and education. This position ensures that the Branch's operational plans, capital projects, and business strategies are integrated, sustainable, and capable of achieving Waste's mandate to reduce and manage Edmonton's residential waste while implementing Council's vision for a climate-resilient city.
What will you do?
Lead the implementation of the 25-year Waste Strategy, a strategic path to improving waste reduction and diversion throughout the public and entire City of Edmonton organization, including roadmaps (Waste Reduction Roadmap; Industrial, Commercial and Institutional Roadmap), programs like three-stream apartment and condo collection, and ongoing waste education and outreach (advancing waste reduction, resident education and awareness of waste systems).
Manage the Waste Services capital program (e.g., typically $30M annually), acting as the owner representative to define investment needs, set priorities, allocate budget, and execute project delivery with Integrated Infrastructure Services in alignment with the Project Development and Delivery Model
Oversee the development of multi-year operating and capital budgets for the Branch in partnership with Financial and Corporate Services
Provide leadership and management oversight of the Branch's technical services, including asset management, project engineering and engineering analysis
Direct utility asset life cycle management for waste processing facilities, infrastructure, and fleet assets, developing strategies for systemic renewal and maintenance to maximize service life and minimize life cycle costs, aligning with the City's 10-year Capital Investment Outlook
Lead the development of the Branch's performance measurement framework through reliable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and targets for Branch services, overseeing the creation of operational dashboards and quarterly business reporting
Govern the lifecycle management of procurement and contract management for the Branch, ensuring alignment with corporate policies
Lead Branch-wide program and service design through a customer-focused lens to close the gap between customer expectations and service delivery
Drive business performance measurement, continuous improvement, and contract management across Waste Services, utilizing data, analytics, and service design principles to optimize operations and enhance customer experience
