Community Standards Peace Officer

The Community Standards Peace Officers are responsible to carry out daily duties through its various teams, which provide investigation and enforcement services to the general public, industry  other City Departments, and pride themselves on service excellence. Teams include, Vehicle for Hire Unit, Commercial Vehicle Unit, General Duties, Downtown and the Community Safety Teams. All of these teams contribute to making Edmonton safer for all. 

Community Safety Teams: These peace officers are at the heart of the Healthy Streets Operation Centre and work closely with the Edmonton Police Service, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, Community Safety Liaisons and the communities they serve. These peace officers are expected to provide high visibility and high engagement patrols focused on problem-oriented policing practices in a larger and more integrated team environment in order to find solutions to issues experienced within the communities they serve.

Downtown Peace Officers: These peace officers provide proactive and reactive services to the Civic Centre which includes Churchill Square and other City assets. They support and respond to issues within the core of Edmonton's downtown entertainment district while ensuring the safety and security of persons and City infrastructure. 

General Duties: Otherwise known as the catch all group due to their large scope of responsibilities. These peace officers are responsible for the enforcement and education of a wide variety of bylaw and provincial statutes. Their day-to-day duties include select traffic enforcement responsibilities with a mix of both private and public property complaint types which improve Edmonton's livability and vibrancy.

Commercial Vehicle Unit: By way of robust inspections, this highly trained team is dedicated to the enforcement and education of the commercial transport industry. The team helps protect city infrastructure, highway users and the general public by upholding legislative standards found within bylaws, provincial statutes and federal regulations as they apply to the industry. This team works closely with a multitude of regional partners which includes the Edmonton Police Service, Sheriff Highway Patrol and other local enforcement agencies. 

Vehicle for Hire: This team is entrusted to educate and enforce a variety of regulations as it relates to the operations of vehicles for hire within the City of Edmonton. This proactive team ensures that vehicles for hire working within the City are adequately licensed and mechanically sound while also ensuring that drivers adhere to the rules of the road. The team works with and for the industry to ensure that current standards and regulations are met. 

Animal Control Peace Officer

Promote responsible pet ownership and cultivate safe, healthy, and harmonious communities by becoming an Animal Control Peace Officer. This role provides an opportunity to enhance your communication and problem-solving skills while working towards a rewarding career in enforcement. Your effectiveness will be gauged by your ability to achieve prompt results within a framework of respect, inclusivity, and a service-oriented approach.

In Edmonton, the number of companion animals is on the rise, making the role of Animal Control Peace Officers indispensable in ensuring community safety, protecting animal welfare, and educating Edmontonians about responsible pet ownership. Utilize your law enforcement education and experience to foster community connections, drive positive outcomes, and resolve challenging situations as a compassionate advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves, ‘Voice for the Voiceless'.


Park Ranger Peace Officer

Work in North America's largest urban parkland reserve, known as the "Ribbon of Green".  As a Park Ranger Peace Officer, you'll contribute to ensuring a safe and enjoyable co-existence between the valley's plants, wildlife and ten million annual visitors in Edmonton's 48 kilometers of river valley. Park Ranger Peace Officers promote conservation, safe and responsible outdoor recreation in our parks system and parks and trail safety.  Park Ranger Peace Officers provide the following services in their portfolio through the following team assignments: 

Park Rangers General duty - These peace officers are the core of the program and are responsible for all aspects of safe urban parkland spaces. Complaint response, parkland & environmental stewardship, proactive public engagement and education are the fundamental responsibilities of the General Duty Rangers.  General duty Rangers are also required to be trained and proficient in ATV/UTV operation, mountain biking, snowmobiles and cross country skiing.  

Marine Unit - A subsidiary of the General Duty program, all Rangers are eligible for this program in the summer months, pending a suitability and training assessment.  The Ranger Marine unit is the city's regulatory team for monitoring and ensuring safe activities on the North Saskatchewan River during the summer months. The unit often works in conjunction with other agencies, such as the Edmonton Police Service or Fire Rescue Services on joint deployments.  

Wildlife Team - These peace officers are highly specialized and deal with wildlife complaints within the city. Operating under the city's philosophy of urban co-existence, they investigate and evaluate complaints of aggressive coyotes, dangerous wildlife or wild animal feeding.  

Encampment Response Teams - these peace Officers are tasked exclusively with assessing and closing illegal encampments in city parkland and public spaces. Working in conjunction with external stakeholders, such as the Edmonton Police and social outreach services, they respond to a high complaint volume with compassion and empathy, providing support to our most vulnerable citizens.
