Summary:

The Research Assistant will work in the Center for Translational Neuroscience (CTN) in the Carney Institute for Brain Science, directed by Eric Morrow MD/PhD and Judy Liu MD/PhD, under the direct supervision of Dr. Morrow. The position involves research with patients, including adults and children, and families with neurogenetic disorders involving autism, epilepsy and related neurologic disorders. This position will involve working with families who are Spanish-speaking. Fluency in Spanish is preferred.

The CTN studies molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurological and neuropsychiatric disease, including autism, intellectual disability, epilepsy and neurodegenerative disease. The goals of the CTN are to build knowledge of the pathophysiology of disease and also to develop new diagnostic tools and treatments for these brain conditions. This position involves patient-oriented research which is conducted in collaboration with colleagues in affiliated hospital settings, yet the work is well-integrated into a setting also involving laboratory-based genetic and neuroscience research. The position is responsible for day to day tasks associated with multiple studies of rare genetic disorders conducted by the CTN at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and affiliated hospitals E.P. Bradley Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital. Duties include interviewing participants and families to gather study data and obtain informed consent; maintenance of study records and tracking of study participants; data entry, reporting, and assistance with database management; and assistance with recruitment efforts. There is an opportunity to assist with data analysis and preparation of manuscripts.


This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 06/30/2026 which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications:

Education and Experience

Grade 7:

  • Required: BA or BS in the field of psychology, behavioral sciences, biology, neuroscience or related field
    and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Required: Course work in genetics, cell biology and neuroscience at the bachelor's level. Courses in
    research methodologies and statistics preferred.
  • Preferred: Experience and/or interest in working with individuals with autism or neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Preferred: Fluency in Spanish.

Grade 8:

  • Required: BA or BS in the field of psychology, behavioral sciences, biology, neuroscience or related field and 1-2 years of experience.
  • Undergraduate research experience with previous experience working in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Required: Course work in genetics, cell biology and neuroscience at the bachelor's level. Courses in research methodologies and statistics preferred.
  • Preferred Experience and/or interest in working with individuals with autism or neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Preferred: Fluency in Spanish

  • Facility with basic computer software and some abilities in statistical methods is a plus. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office programs.

  • Some evenings, weekends and holidays may be required.
