Business Intelligence Developer/Senior Business Intelligence Developer

Office of Information Technology

The Business Intelligence Developer or Senior Business Intelligence Developer will be involved in many aspects of developing and supporting institutional data reporting and analytics solutions.


The Developer will elicit requirements from business users through interviews, observation, conversation, and process analysis, then capture, articulate, and prioritize the requirements in clear and understandable form. Work products may include meeting notes, requirements documents, project proposals, issue summaries, process flows, and more.


Based on requirements, the Developer will design and develop robust, effective, automated, and user-friendly BI solutions. Work products may include data models, database objects, wireframes, data visualizations, dashboards, reports, and more. The Developer will work with BI team colleagues to
validate solutions internally, then support end users in testing and validating them. The Developer will thoroughly document solutions so that the team can effectively and efficiently provide ongoing support.


The Developer will assist, teach, mentor, and support end users of our BI platforms and solutions. Activities may include troubleshooting application functionality and performance issues; investigating data issues; modifying models, views, dashboards, reports, and other deliverables in response to changing requirements; testing patches and upgrades; and performing application administration duties.


About our team


● We are a team of seven within Brown's Office of Information Technology.
● We develop and support the data environment that enables Brown;s institutional reporting and analytics, including a growing enterprise data warehouse as well as other data repositories, two enterprise business intelligence platforms, and reporting and analytics solutions that support many areas of the university.
● Our customers are trustees, stewards, and users of institutional data. We assist, support, and advise them on use of our platforms to meet their data and analytics needs.
● We use a variety of BI/DW tools and platforms, including Cognos Analytics, Tableau, Snowflake, Oracle, Talend, and ER/Studio.

Required education and experience

Business Intelligence Developer
● Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
● SQL experience
● Experience developing reporting and/or analytics content for one or more BI platforms (esp. IBM Cognos Analytics, Tableau Server)
● Experience designing reports and/or visualizations
● Experience supporting internal or external customers Senior Business Intelligence Developer

Senior Business Intelligence Developer
● Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
● 2+ years of experience in a support role within an IT organization
● Experience reading and writing complex SQL queries regularly in a professional role
● Experience developing reporting and analytics content for more than one BI platform (esp. IBM Cognos Analytics, Tableau Server)
● Experience designing complex BI solutions, including both reports and visualizations
● Experience supporting multiple internal or external customer groups representing different subject areas and with different levels of technical knowledge


Preferred education and experience
● Experience working with higher education data
● Experience querying and/or extracting data from ERP systems (esp. Ellucian Banner, Workday)

● Visual communication and UI/UX design experience
● Application administration experience
● Experience developing interactive dashboards
● Experience exploring data for insights
● Solid knowledge of statistics
● Experience using agile methodology (esp. Scrum)
● Experience using SDLC processes to deliver BI solutions
● Experience with analytics and programming languages (esp. Python)
● Experience with version control systems (esp. Git/GitHub)
● Experience with cloud-based data management (esp. Snowflake, Google Cloud Platform)
● Experience developing logical and physical data models (esp. using ER/Studio)
● Experience designing and developing ETL pipelines (esp. using Talend, ODI)
● Experience using RESTful API's in data pipelines
 

Required competencies
● SQL proficiency
● Proficiency developing analytics content for one or more BI platforms (esp. IBM Cognos Analytics, Tableau Server)
● Skill in presenting data and information in a way that facilitates comprehension
