Description

The Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center (BMC) seek an exceptional leader to serve as Chair, Department of Dermatology and as Dermatologist-in-Chief. The department includes laboratory, office, and clinical space on the Boston University Medical Campus (BUMC) and at BMC. This position offers candidates the unique opportunity to lead a dynamic department through its continued expansion.

Department of Dermatology
The Department of Dermatology is currently ranked #10 nationally in NIH funding. This includes a wide array of research interests with ongoing clinical trials and an overarching goal to discover innovative and effective treatment approaches. This also includes working with the Boston University Medical Campus Center for Aging Research. The Dermatology Residency Program includes 15 residents in total, with 5 residents in each of three years of training; additional fellowships include Dermatopathology; Cutaneous Oncology; and Rheumatologic Dermatology. The Dermatology Department operates its own Dermapathology Skin Pathology Laboratory (SPL). Staffed with Board Certified Dermapathologists and a support staff this facility processes over 20,000 specimens per year. SPL provides services for Boston Medical Center's Dermatology physicians and other Ambulatory departments plus they serve outside Dermatology practices in the New England area.

About the role:
The Chair will be a major institutional leader and must advocate for their department's staff and faculty. Working with the Dean and BMC President, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to expand on an already strong foundation of grant funded research, clinical care and education excellence to continue to build a nationally and internationally renowned department, promoting its numerous missions within the university, medical school, hospital, and the Boston Medical Center Health System.

The successful Chair must bring vision to creating the department's future, coupled with a leadership style that inspires others. Above all, the Chair will be a consensus builder and an agent for change in an era when the research enterprise is undergoing innovation and transformation nationwide.

Requirements include:

Education

  • The successful candidate will have earned a MD, MD/PhD, and Dermatology board certification by the American Board of Dermatology or equivalent and have academic credentials that support a faculty appointment at the professor rank at Boston University.

Experience

  • Expertise as a superb clinical dermatologist
  • Established record as a strong educator
  • Demonstrated track record of leadership and management gained within an academic department, research intensive university, or institute.
  • NIH funded research background in Dermatology, ideally with current research support.
  • Strong organizational, financial, and budgetary skills that enable long-term planning towards strategic and tactical department goals.
  • Success in mentoring and developing outstanding talent towards clinical, research, and academic
  • A strong record of research accomplishments and productivity, including publications in leading peer-reviewed journals.
