Position Summary  

The Arts & Humanities division is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time tenure track faculty member for Fall 2025 in the World Languages department. The World Languages faculty will perform duties and functions under the general direction of the Provost and shall be responsible primarily to the Dean of Arts & Humanities.  

The successful candidate must reside in Washington State by the start of the position and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching in person. This includes teaching on the Bellevue College campus and participating in non-teaching duties such as committee service, advising, and professional development activities. While there may be opportunities to teach online or hybrid courses, faculty are expected to maintain a significant presence on campus to support students, collaborate with colleagues, and contribute to the college community.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Position Salary Range: $81,757.08/year - $114,664.94/year

Annual salary is based on a 176-day contract with a minimum of $81,757.08; beginning salary will be determined by the assessment of the candidate's education and related experience. New hires start no higher than $87,663.74 unless exceptional circumstances prevail. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

In addition to teaching, full-time faculty maintains office hours and participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department  

The World Languages Department at Bellevue College offers courses in Arabic, ASL, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. The faculty represents an extensive range of interests and is committed to excellence. The Department recognizes the need for World Languages proficiency in today¿s changing world. 

We are dedicated professionals who provide instruction and guidance to our students, and we are an integral part of the humanities. Every effort is made to teach students to think clearly and critically, to make logical and ethical judgments and to communicate effectively with others, thus overcoming cultural and language barriers. Essential Functions  

Teaching duties include:

  • Teach 15 credits (3 courses) of French and one additional language per quarter at the first- and second-year levels on a variety schedules and modalities, primarily on ground.
  • Prepare and implement lessons to achieve assigned courses' learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate prospective students¿ language proficiency and place them in appropriate course levels.
  • Ongoing curriculum development, assessment, revision, and implementation through inter- and intra-departmental cooperation and collaboration.

Non-teaching duties include:

  • Participate in department, division, and college governance (such as serving on committees, advising student clubs, and supporting initiatives).
  • Maintain knowledge and skills current in discipline and area of assignment.
  • Participate in the life and culture of the department, division, and college, including the college-wide effort to dismantle barriers that can impact underrepresented and historically marginalized student populations.
Minimum Qualifications  
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in French or a closely-related field such as applied linguistics or French/Francophone literature.
  • Ability to use French at native or near native level.
  • Ability to use one additional language taught in the World Languages program at native or near native level.
  • Coursework or other training in language teaching methodology.
  • Teaching experience in French as a foreign language at the community college and/or university level.
  • Willingness and ability to teach in various modalities (face to face, hybrid, online).
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an inclusive manner with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Ability and willingness to teach on campus.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • College teaching experience in an additional language taught in the World Languages Program.
  • Experience teaching in various modalities (face to face, hybrid, online).
  • Familiarity with recent pedagogical developments in language teaching.
  • Experience using a variety of teaching and assessment techniques that engage students and emphasize interaction/
  • Experience in addressing disproportionate impact and equity issues in the higher education environment.
  • Experience with Canvas or another learning management system.
  • Experience in assessing student proficiency for placement.
  • Evidence of effective intercultural communication skills, collegiality, and working collaboratively with colleagues in an intercultural department.
