Position Summary  

The School of Business & Technology at Bellevue College is seeking an Adjunct Faculty member for our Data Management & Analysis BAS program, a leader in preparing graduates for the rapidly evolving field of data-driven decision-making. This role involves delivering hands-on instruction in data analytics, emphasizing industry-relevant tools and techniques. The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in a related field, have practical industry experience in data analytics, and demonstrate proficiency in programming languages like Python and R, along with SQL for database management. Responsibilities include integrating real-world case studies into the curriculum, managing data analytics projects, and actively engaging with a diverse student body.

As a part-time faculty member, you will be involved in teaching in various modalities, including online and evening on-campus classes, to accommodate our diverse student population. Priority will be given to candidates who can effectively translate their industry experience into the classroom and contribute to the development of a curriculum that prepares students for successful careers in data analytics. The position requires a commitment to educational excellence, student success, and adherence to program assessment practices and policies.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule  

Adjunct Professor is typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

Quarterly remuneration for 5-credit lecture class is $5,716.52 - $6,968.62. Compensation is prorated based on type and duration of assignments. Individuals newly hired to Adjunct Professor group at the college are placed at the minimum rate per union bargaining agreement. Certain positions may also be eligible for assignment/project-based additional compensation, including a High Demand Stipend up to $8,350 annually, prorated based on the discipline and duration of the assignment. All additional compensations are subject to change depending on funding and negotiated agreement.

Generous benefits package for eligible employees is offered through Washington State plans that includes multiple medical, dental, life and disability coverage choices for employees and dependents; choices of retirement and deferred compensation plans; paid personal leave plan; transit program, reduced tuition, employee discounts and memberships, etc. Eligible employees are faculty who work a combined load of at least 50% at Bellevue College and other Washington State public institutions of higher education for two consecutive quarters are eligible for health and dental insurance at the start of the second consecutive quarter. 

In addition to teaching, faculty maintains office hours and may participate in department and college activities. This position is represented by the Bellevue College Association of Higher Education (BCAHE) union.

About the Department  

The Data Management & Analysis BAS program is within the School of Business & Technology division and stands at the forefront of preparing graduates for the dynamic and evolving field of data-driven decision-making. With a curriculum that expertly blends theoretical knowledge and practical application, this program offers specialized concentrations in data analytics and business intelligence. These concentrations are meticulously designed to provide students with a deep understanding of mathematics, statistics, and a variety of descriptive and predictive models. The program's core focus is to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge essential for effectively interpreting and leveraging data in various business contexts. By immersing students in real-world scenarios and cutting-edge techniques, our program ensures that graduates are not only proficient in data analysis but are also adept at applying this knowledge to guide strategic business action and decision-making. Our commitment to excellence in education and research prepares students to thrive in this rapidly emerging field, making them valuable assets to any data-driven organization.

Essential Functions  

We are seeking applications for a pool of applicants interested in teaching courses in our accredited Bachelor of Applied Science in Data Management & Analysis degree.   

Depending on qualifications, new adjunct faculty may be assigned to one or more classes that match their demonstrated skills and documented work history.

Adjunct work is provided on a part-time basis, typically assigned as needed on a quarterly basis, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment. The Data Management & Analysis department consists of several full-time faculty and a number of quarterly-contracted faculty.  

The program has a strong need for adjunct faculty who can provide hands-on instruction with tools used by industry.  Priority consideration will be given to faculty who can demonstrate how they have used such software in their own past work experience and can share curriculum design ideas around the use of such software to best prepare students for landing jobs after completing the program.

Typically, part-time faculty teach on campus, as dictated by program need, course schedule, and enrollment demand.  Most classes meet one or two days a week. While courses are offered in online and on campus modalities, faculty may be assigned to teach classes in either modality. Most in person classes in the Data Management & Analysis program are taught in the evening as there are a number of working adults enrolled in the program.

Part-time faculty are expected to be available to students periodically outside of class; to engage students actively in their own learning; to maintain high standards regarding course content; provide students with timely feedback on their course work and examinations; and to adhere to program assessment practices and policies.  

Part-time faculty may be expected to participate in governance activities to support student success efforts and assessment tasks; attend occasional departmental and division meetings.

Minimum Qualifications  
  • Master's degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in Data Analytics or a related industry.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data analytics, such as Python and R.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL for database management and data manipulation.
  • Knowledge of ethical considerations and data privacy laws in data analytics.
  • Ability to integrate real-world case studies and projects into the curriculum.
  • Skills in developing and managing data analytics projects from conception to completion.
  • Understanding of industry-specific applications of data analytics in fields such as finance, healthcare, or marketing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to engage and inspire students from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications  
  • Experience with Python, R, SQL, Tableau.
  • Previous teaching experience at the college level.
  • Ability to teach data cleaning and preprocessing techniques.
  • Familiarity with data mining algorithms / machine learning algorithms and their applications.
  • Experience with business intelligence and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, QlikView, Tableau).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and services for data analytics (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Experience with multivariate data analysis techniques (e.g., discriminant analysis, factor analysis).
  • Experience with predictive analytics techniques (e.g., text analytics, sentiment analysis, neural networks).
  • Understanding of big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Hive, Spark).
  • Knowledge of data warehousing, data pipelining, and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
