JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: Proactively facilitates the placement of patients throughout the Baton Rouge General Medical Center Bluebonnet campus. Also collaborates with the EVS, Transport, and Patient Flow Coordinators across all clinical units to expedite discharges and ensure optimal patient flow through the facility. Accepts referrals to the Throughput Operations center and works with Supervisor to determine medical necessity, the urgency of transfer or admission, provides resolution to transfer request whilst ensuring that BRG transfer policies and EMTALA requirements are met. Communicate with the appropriate Supervisor, Manager, or Director to escalate delayed placement, as necessary.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

JOB FUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

1. Politely answers, manages, and refers, as appropriate, phone calls for bed requests.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Answers in-coming telephone calls expeditiously and demonstrates professional, effective communication skills at all times.
• Avoids placing callers on hold and assures no other callers are waiting for service.
• Retrieves voice message and returns calls within 15 minutes of the time the message was left.
• Forwards phone calls to the Throughput Operations Supervisor or House Supervisor when taking breaks.

 


2. Demonstrates effectiveness in facilitating the admission of patients, both internal and external, into the organization and collaborates with individuals necessary to ensure proper patient placement.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Verifies patient information, recognizes clinical diagnosis and makes patient room assignments independently and in collaboration with the Throughput Operations Supervisor or nursing House Supervisor when necessary.
• Accurately relays patient admission information to the Admissions department and the Call Center insurance representatives for direct admissions.
• Maintains an effective working relationship with nursing unit management and staff, physicians, physician office personnel and other departments.
• Assists in recommending alternative methods of providing services to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of departmental functions.
• Collaborates with multidisciplinary departments to enhance throughput.


3. Collects and maintains accurate documentation of all bed board activity and records the information in logs, computerized data entry and other software systems as directed.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Ensures that records, reports and statistics are consistently collected and maintained as required.
• Accurately collects and enters data for internal bed requests into to the computer 100% of the time.
• Accurately collects and enters data for direct admit bed requests into to the computer 100% of the time.

4. Performs all other duties as assigned.
• Cross trains to other departmental tasks as directed.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
2 to 5 years clinical experience required.
Previous experience in customer service required.
Previous experience in insurance preferred.

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Current Louisiana RN licensure.
Proficiency in typing 40 words per minute, word processing, data processing and spreadsheet utilization required. Excellent organizational, communication and public relations skills required.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIRMENTS
Certificate of completion from an accredited school of nursing.

HIPAA REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records without limitation both paper and electronic, employee health records, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, medical records related to quality data, patient financial information, patient billing 3rd party, patient related complaints, information related to patient location, and/or patients' religious beliefs.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, administers medications/blood products, receives orders for patients, validates patients for any procedure/surgery, transports, monitors or observes patients for procedures including infusion pumps, monitors clinical alarms, and collects blood samples.
