JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: Provides respiratory therapy and/or performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures related to cardiopulmonary disorder as ordered by physician and in accordance with established standards and practices. Job is performed appropriately for the age population served as defined in the department's scope of service.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

JOB FUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:

1. Performs respiratory care procedures without direct supervision.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Delivers and correctly sets up equipment.
• Monitors patients on continuous ventilation at frequency defined by department policy.
• Monitors environmental control systems, ensures quality and safety standards are met 100% of the time.
• Observes patient, checks equipment, changes/makes adjustments as necessary, adhering to department standards of care.
• Discontinues therapy as ordered; applies emergency protocols when needed.
• Collaborates with the medical staff on the effectiveness of the respiratory treatment as it relates to the patient/family plan of care.

2. Maintains established hospital/departmental quality assurance, safety and infection control policies and procedures.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
• Assists with and participates in the development and implementation of QA and QI functions to evaluate and improve the operations for the respiratory care department.
• Follows established departmental safety and infection control policies and procedures. Cleans and checks equipment, making sure it is sterile and ready for patient use 100% of the time.
• Collaborates with the medical staff on the effectiveness of the respiratory treatment as it relates to the patient/family plan of care.
• Handles medications safely and securely

3. Provides staff education through the presentation of in-services; serves as mentor and resource to other staff.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Demonstrates currency of knowledge about professional and technological changes and assesses education need to address changes.
• Develops staff education in-services that are consistently evaluated as excellent and pertinent.
• Seeks opportunities to enhance staff knowledge through mentoring and modeling proper procedure.

4. Performs all other duties as assigned.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year in acute care hospital preferred

SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Current Louisiana licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist
CPR Certified
NRP, PALS and ACLS preferred

HIPAA REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records w/o limitation both paper and electronic, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, information related to patient location, religious beliefs and/or public health records, medical records related to quality/data, patient financial and/or 3rd party billing, patient-related complaints, research information, investigatory information.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, administers/receives/collects meds/blood, orders or products, validates, transports, monitors or observes patients for procedures including infusion pumps, monitors clinical alarms for all ages.
