BAE Systems, one of the world's leading defense contractors and a stable Fortune 500 Company, has an opening for an Electrical Engineering Manager at the Holston Army Ammunition Plant in Kingsport, TN. The Engineering Manager directly oversees the electrical, instrumentation, and controls (EIC) engineering staff supporting design, construction, and commissioning of various multi-million dollar modernization programs at Holston Army Ammunition Plant and Radford Army Ammunition Plant (Radford, VA).

The Electrical Engineering Manager, reporting to the Deputy Director, Engineering, leads and mentors the EIC engineering staff across two sites (Kingsport, TN and Radford, VA). The manager will be a functional and strategic leader, and must provide detailed assistance and fully understand EIC project requirements during proposal generation, design, construction, and commissioning. These projects include new facilities and upgrades of existing facilities. In this role, you will manage an experienced, self-motivated engineering staff, providing a balance between empowerment and direction. You will play an active role in requirements planning, customer expectation management, solution delivery, and problem resolution.


  • Manage EIC staff including multiple Professional Engineers, Control Systems Engineers, and Electrical Designers in a matrix organization
  • Perform a variety of management and supervisory functions; hire, train, assign, supervise, and evaluate personnel
  • Maintain and develop skillsets through on-going performance conversations and annual Performance and Development Review (reward and discipline)
  • Provide technical oversight to ensure timely and economical execution of proposals, projects, and department initiatives
  • Incorporate strategic planning and budget control; identify staffing, equipment, facilities, and related needs
  • Provide leadership and strategic planning regarding engineering estimates, lifecycle management, and risk management
  • Develop and mature standards, templates, and specifications to increase consistency, replicability, and efficiency for departmental improvement initiatives
  • Provide leadership in safety including responsibility to review and approve all project or building Electrical Area Hazardous Locations Classifications
  • Work in a collaborative environment with functional managers (Mechanical, Chemical, Safety, Systems, etc.) to successfully develop and deliver projects
  • Provide technical guidance and EIC resources as needed to support production and maintenance
  • Chair and assess Technical Bid Reviews and Design Reviews
  • Responsible for safe work practices during construction and safety of designs and specifications
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required

Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, or closely related field, from an accredited college or university
  • 8+ years related experience in engineering design, construction, and commissioning including relevant leadership experience directing a team of engineers
  • 5+ years experience in the design of electrical systems for Hazardous Locations involving flammable vapors and dusts and explosion-proof installations
  • Experience in design, construction, and commissioning of industrial facilities preferably in chemical processing facilities
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to answer questions, provide direction, and resolve problems
  • Effectively communicate with various functional departments, suppliers, and customers
  • Knowledge of management and supervisory principles
  • Skills in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands while working within deadlines to complete projects and assignments
  • Experience creating program plans, estimates, and proposals
  • Knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, NEC and other industry applicable standards and codes related to EIC
  • Electrical engineering technical competencies to direct and review analyses, designs, and calculations related to power systems, controls, and instrumentation
  • Familiarity with power systems, instrumentation, and control systems and their application/specification
  • Excellent understanding of EIC technical documentation required for construction, commissioning, and operations
  • Lead the EIC team in maturing the culture to improve design safety, quality, and consistency
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Skills and Education
  • Chemical manufacturing experience
  • Energetic materials experience
  • Knowledge of Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) and applicable codes and statutes
  • Experience in design of Safety Instrumented Systems
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Project Management Professional (PMP)
