Job Summary


Under indirect supervision, performs all duties associated with acquisition, processing, submission for interpretation, and archiving of radiographic images. Responsible for the care of the patient while in the ultrasound department.


Essential Functions

    • Positions patients and selects appropriate protocol to demonstrate anatomy of area of interest based on accepted ultrasound/sonography principles. Judges diagnostic quality of finished medical images prior to submission to radiologist for interpretation.

    • Under indirect supervision of the radiologist the technologist customizes each patient exam based on accepted ultrasound/sonography principles in order to optimize the diagnostic value of each specific imaging encounter.

    • Reviews all diagnostic ultrasound requests for appropriateness based on clinical information

    • provided. All questionable orders are communicated to the radiologist for final approval.

    • Performs clerical responsibilities associated with acquisition, processing and archiving of patient records. Completes exams in EPIC and turns in fee tickets to capture charges for procedures performed.

    • Offers detailed explanation of diagnostic procedures to patients prior and answers questions as appropriate.

    • Observes patient while in ultrasound for change in status and makes appropriate intervention or contacts primary care givers for instruction.

    • Supervises students and directs other personnel that may be assigned to the area for which they are responsible including student radiographers/sonographers.

    • Identifies and corrects problems as appropriate with all critical occurrences reported to the next level of authority

    • Maintains all required continuing education and applicable certifications as a radiographer/ultrasound technologist.


Education, Training, and Experience



    • Must be a High School or GED Diploma Graduate.

    • Graduate of an approved School of Ultrasound.

    • Registered in Ultrasound by the ARRT (S) or ARDMS.

    • 2 year of experience required.

    • Must complete and consistently demonstrate the requirements of a competency checklist for the assigned position/shift.
