THE ROLE:
AMD is seeking a Principal System Thermal Architect responsible for the thermal architecture of GPU servers and racks. The role will interface with AMD customers on all cooling related topics and requirements, work with the Mechanical and Thermal Design team in the design and development of key components & systems, conduct research and engage with industry vendors to understand next generation cooling technologies and solutions, and participate in and lead Proof of Concept initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Meet directly with customers on a regular basis to discuss, conceptualize and implement unique solutions to their thermal challenges.
- Work with the internal engineering teams to optimize the thermal performance of servers using simulated and empirical data. Ensure designs are also optimized for cooling cost and efficiency.
- Troubleshoot and optimize airflow in new and existing product lines.
- Support the cooling aspects of custom engineering products and/or proof of concepts.
- Create test plans, analyze test reports, and validate the system thermal performance & reliability to ensure the results meet product requirements.
- Contribute to product System Architecture Specifications.
- Support procurement team to identify and manage 3rd party vendors.
Preferred Experience
- Proactive, team-oriented, and results-driven mindset.
- Strong background in heat transfer and fluid dynamics with emphasis on electronics thermal management. Thorough understanding of electronics cooling technologies; Air cooling and liquid cooling.
- Experience with single-phase and two-phase cold plates, liquid interconnects, quick disconnects, hoses, and manifolds.
- Deep understanding of thermal management design elements including TIM, spreaders, heat sink, vapor chamber, heat pipe, and fan.
- Experience with validation of liquid cooled systems including component and system level test as well as validation for reliability.
- Proficiency with CFD using Flotherm, Icepak, or similar.
- Experience with 3D CAD such as SolidWorks, Creo, or similar.
- Server-level, rack-level, and datacenter design experience.
- Experience with Design of Experiments, instrumentation, data acquisition, and data analysis.
- Ability to write scripts in programming languages (i.e. Python, C/C++, MATLAB, etc.) for data analysis & tool development.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills at the engineering and executive levels, including a proven track record of working across organization boundaries to define requirements, solve complex problems and drive programs to successful completion.
- Experience working with directly with customers.
- Good knowledge of Design for Manufacturing, including experience with volume manufacturing in Asia and North America.
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
- BS/MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related degree.
- Preferred: MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering and working experience in related field
