With a dedicated research team, Alcoa will continue to focus on plant diversity return, fauna recolonisation and water stewardship, while introducing new areas of research to support forest conservation beyond mining and embrace Indigenous cultural values and practices.

About the Role

As our Regional Research Director, you will play a pivotal role in establishing and operating our dedicated research centre. Reporting to the Director of Environment - Australia, you will provide strategic direction for research projects and identify the broader needs of the northern jarrah forest beyond mining operations. You will be the public face of our research programs, fostering collaborations with external research institutions, and managing a diverse team of scientists to deliver an exciting regional research agenda.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Developing and executing a governance structure, including potential formation of an Indigenous Advisory Committee.
  • Supervising complex medium-to large-scale research projects, internally and with external collaborators.
  • Overseeing and contributing to research supporting WA Mining's environmental management plans.
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with stakeholders and engaging external researchers.
  • Identifying and addressing important forest management needs beyond Alcoa's operations.
  • Communicating research results to internal and external stakeholders through various platforms.
  • Facilitating technology transfer to improving business practices.
  • Contributing ecological knowledge to mine rehabilitation programs.
  • Nurturing a culture of collaboration and curiosity within the team, and collaboratively develop a strategic vision for the centre.

What you can bring to the role

  • PhD qualification in Environmental Restoration Ecology, Plant Ecology, Botany, Zoology, Hydrology, Environmental Science or similar Biological Sciences.
  • Extensive academic experience/academic standing within the environmental field with a track record in scientific publications for multiple audiences.
  • Background in the resources sector within a leadership capacity with a highly collaborative and inclusive approach.
  • Demonstrated project management skills with experience working with a variety of stakeholders across universities, state government, consultancies and third-party organisations.
  • An analytical mind with a create approach to solving complex environmental challenges.
