About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a skilled professional to join our team as the ABS Business Improvement Manager at our Aluminium Smelter in the picturesque coastal town of Portland, Victoria. This full-time role operates on a Monday to Friday roster.

As part of the Alcoa Business System (ABS)—a global program focused on continuous improvement—you'll collaborate with a worldwide network to implement impactful strategies and drive operational excellence. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the activities undertaken by this role are supported by Alcoa's worldwide business improvement system – ABS (Alcoa Business System) and its linkage to Operational Excellence (OpEx). This is a well-defined continuous improvement methodology that seeks to improve quality, reduce cost, improve cycle time and generate growth opportunities for the business.

You are accountable for and will undertake the following duties:

  • Provide advice, guidance and problem-solving support in the operation and maintenance of equipment by applying tools from Alcoa's standard range of Lean Manufacturing and ABS methodologies, tools and skills to solve short- and longer-term problems as part of the operating centre team.
  • Design and implement the ABS principles in each department.
  • Develops creative and flexible approaches and solutions,
  • Facilitates the improvement of equipment and people utilisation
  • Identifies & implements cost reduction opportunities
  • Monitors execution progress and works with Area Managers and Superintendents to ensure on-time delivery of planned improvement initiatives
  • Undertakes risk analysis and develops contingency plans to ensure robustness of execution

What you can bring to the role

To play a part in our ongoing success we are seeking someone with:

  • Tertiary qualified (engineering or equivalent operations/ industry experience)
  • 10+ years of experience with Alcoa or similar industry, primarily in the manufacturing / line area.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills to coach the location's leadership team to embrace the concepts of Quality Management / Lean Manufacturing and apply them in all aspects of the business. 
  • Ability to influence and motivate individuals or groups at all levels of the organisation.
  • High level understanding of team dynamics.
  • Practical knowledge of the application of ABS methods to business improvement.
  • Working knowledge of Alcoa's business functions and processes is desired but not essential.

About the Location

Our Portland Smelter is a joint venture between Alcoa of Australia (55%), CITIC (22.5%) and Marubeni Aluminium Australia (22.5%).
