Position Reports to: Director, Family Birth Center

Department Description:

The Lactation Services team at Wilson Health is dedicated to supporting mothers, infants, and families throughout their breastfeeding journey. Our team provides education, guidance, and evidence-based lactation support both during hospitalization and after discharge, helping families achieve their feeding goals while promoting positive maternal and infant health outcomes.

Job Summary:

The Lactation Consultant serves as a clinical expert and educator, providing comprehensive breastfeeding assessment, education, and support to mothers, infants, and families. This role works collaboratively with patients, providers, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team to promote successful breastfeeding experiences, improve patient outcomes, and deliver compassionate, family-centered care. The Lactation Consultant supports mothers during hospitalization and through outpatient follow-up services while serving as a valuable resource for breastfeeding education and best practices.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assess breastfeeding mothers and infants, providing guidance on positioning, latch techniques, milk supply, and feeding success.
  • Provide individualized breastfeeding education and counseling to patients and family members during hospitalization and following discharge.
  • Conduct lactation consultations in person and by telephone, documenting patient interactions appropriately.
  • Plan, teach, and evaluate breastfeeding education classes for expectant and new mothers.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary team members to support patient goals and positive maternal and infant outcomes.
  • Provide outpatient lactation support and follow-up services for mothers experiencing breastfeeding challenges.
  • Educate mothers on breast care, breastfeeding management, lactation suppression, and infant feeding options.
  • Coordinate referrals to community resources, specialists, and additional support services as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge of lactation best practices, quality improvement initiatives, and evidence-based standards of care.

Performs additional duties as assigned, within the scope of responsibility.

Qualifications:
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Ohio.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Previous experience in Maternal/Child Health, Women's Health, Postpartum, Newborn Care, or Lactation Services.
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification required or must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Demonstrated teaching, communication, and patient education skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and collaboration skills.
