Job Duties

Western State Hospital is seeking a full time Pharmacist Supervisor who will be responsible for administrative as well as clinical function of the pharmacy. This position will provide supervision and technical guidance of pharmacy staff; budgeting; planning' goals & objectives' quality assurance, regulatory activities, and inventory control; procuring, storing, and distributing all pharmaceuticals used in patient care at the facility; providing accurate information regarding therapeutic use, routes of administration, doses, side effects, contraindications; drug interactions, and special precautions for use; provide guidance and training for staff and assisting others to resolve technical problems; exercise sound judgement in effective direction and leadership; making administrative and clinical decisions independently.

The Pharmacist Supervisor will provide oversight of all work performed by technicians and assumes responsibility for appropriateness, completeness, and accuracy; ensure that the requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation; must practice pharmacy as legally defined by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy; interprets and fills medication orders prescribed by physicians; use the Cerner Pharmacy system to process medication orders and look up/access pertinent information necessary for safe, efficient patient use; use Omnicell Connect-k software in order to assure functionality of the pharmacy automation (ADCs, Robot-Rx, PackMed) and processing/accountability of controlled substances (using the Narc Vaults).

Minimum Qualifications

- current license to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- previous hospital or retail pharmacy experience
- ability to supervise administrative, clinical, and operational aspects of the pharmacy
- adhere to state and federal regulations and accreditation standards of the joint commission
- knowledge of the principles of supervising and directing the work of others
- knowledge of of all medications used within the facility including their use, potential side effects, and interactions
- ability to communicate information of a technical nature to clinicians
- dispenses medication accurately and in a timely manner

Additional Considerations

- Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited academic program. Doctor of Pharmacy degree
