Description

Reporting to the director, the assistant director will plan, organize and coordinate services, activities, and programs related to military-affiliated students. The assistant director will advise student veterans and connect them to campus and community resources. The position requires knowledge of military culture, transitioning from the military to civilian and/or college environment, and the challenges of military-affiliated students. The position chairs the Veteran Advisory Council. The position functions as the Responsible University Officer (RUO) for student organizations associated with the Military and Veteran Center.

What You Will Need – Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of military culture, transitioning from the military to a civilian and/or college environment, and the challenges of military-affiliated students.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills through a variety of mediums (e.g., in person, in writing, and digitally).
  • Ability to successfully manage projects concurrently while meeting assigned deadlines and maintaining satisfactory work.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and PeopleSoft or related software


Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree; Three years' experience working within the U.S. military; One year of experience working higher education setting in an advisory, administrative, program coordination, recruiting or educational capacity; Knowledge of military culture, transitioning from the military to a civilian and/or college environment and the challenges of military-affiliated students.



Preferred Education and Experience

What We Would Like You to Have –
  • Master's Degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Three – five years of experience in the U.S. military
  • Three – five years of experience at an institution of higher education
  • Experience conducting in-person or online education or training programs
  • Basic proficiency in social media management
  • One year of experience at an institution of higher education


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, market, and facilitate the Military and Veteran Center activities, programs, and services related to military-affiliated students.
  • Oversee communication and marketing initiatives (newsletters, policies and procedures, website, departmental correspondence, etc.).
  • Recommend new programs designed to enhance student development and success.
  • Collect, evaluate, and analyze data and prepare administrative reports on the utilization and effectiveness of support services offered through the Military and Veteran Center.
  • Provide advisory support to military-affiliated students as they transition to college life, including knowledge of admissions, financial aid, and benefits.
  • Connect current students and prospective students with resources to supplement and enhance the academic experience, student retention, and graduation.
  • Provide guidance and support for academic and non-academic issues.
  • Manage prospective student inquiries and follow-up. Facilitate outreach to prospective students and community college veteran offices.
  • Provide supervision to federal Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) work-study students.
  • Responsible for understanding and interpreting the needs of student veterans to staff, faculty, and administration officials.
  • Develop collaborative partnerships with a variety of university departments.
  • Provide educational programs related to military cultural competence.
  • Chair the Veteran Advisory Council.
  • Develop collaborative partnerships with a variety of external and internal constituents.
  • Maintain positive and productive relationships with external veterans' offices and organizations.


Additional Information

Remote Notice:
After the probationary period, this role may be eligible for a hybrid (partly remote/partly in office) work schedule, subject to business need and manager approval. Must be located within the DFW Area and have the ability to be on campus with 24 hours of notice. A UT Dallas Remote Work Agreement will be required within 14 days after approval.

Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday with occasional evening and weekend events.
