Position Summary:   The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is a campus-wide service organization dedicated to the strategic planning, implementation and support of technology products and services that anticipate and meet the academic, research and administrative needs of the UCI community. OIT offers technical leadership and services to our clients with a focus on providing innovative solutions, delivering exceptional customer service, and creating a reliable infrastructure that demonstrates value to the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader community. The Data & Information Management (D&IM) division provides common and shared data and analytics services that are used by multiple OIT divisions, across OIT and across the campus. The OIT Database Administration Team is responsible for the deployment, ongoing maintenance, support, security, and availability of databases for campus systems.

 

Under the direction of the Manager, Database Management, the Senior Database Administrator applies advanced database administration concepts and campus objectives to support highly complex, heterogeneous mission critical database systems. Assesses business needs and technical considerations with minimal direction in order to complete database administration projects of advanced scope and complexity. Selects methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results. Implements database solutions from evaluation to implementation of large enterprise level hardware and software. The Senior Database Administrator uses advanced database knowledge to work with system administrators to establish optimal operating system, database and network parameters for campus database systems and provides advanced technical assistance to application development groups. Leads large, highly complex database migrations and projects of advanced scope and complexity that span many months. Candidate has responsibility for capacity planning and disaster recovery for campus-wide mission critical large databases.

Required:  
  • Five plus (5+) years of experience in SQL Server Database Administration. Preferably two plus (2+) years of experience in AWS Cloud RDS SQL Server Database Administration.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced knowledge of database management systems and standards including SQL Server 2016/2019 database administration concepts and architecture. 
  • Ability to install/upgrade/patch Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or higher versions. 
  • Knowledge of conceptual database design. 
  • Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases. 
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot SQL performance issues.
  • Knowledge relating to capacity planning and interface specifications. 
  • Knowledgeable about professional approaches and relevant standards and technology for management of unstructured data such as text and images. 
  • Demonstrates good judgment and decision-making; problem identification and resolution; identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance through application configuration and programming techniques. 
  • Has effective written / verbal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrates reasoning and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. 
  • Ability to develop procedures and standards relating to database management systems. 
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, service orientation, active listening, effective verbal and written communication skills and organizational skills. 
  • Able to multi-task and prioritize tasks. 
  • Ability to work independently on complex technical projects as well as on a team of technical professionals and relevant decision-makers. 
  • Knowledge of backup/restore steps for the SQL Server environment. 
  • Ability to perform point in time recovery. 
  • Broad knowledge of the IT environment. 
  • Proficiency in AWS RDS, EC2 and/or Aurora database administration and strong knowledge of skills to migrate on-premises SQL Server databases to AWS cloud. 
  • Skills necessary to develop procedures and standards relating to database management systems.

  • Implementation of Transparent Data Encryption for SQL Server databases. Technical skills to develop, implement and test disaster recovery functions using backup technologies.
     
Preferred:  
  • MCSA: SQL 2016 Database Administration, preferred. AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate, preferred.
  • Skills associated with implementing database enhancements that improve performance and reliability of the system at the software, hardware, and operating system level. 
  • Proficiency In implementing Cloud-based DWH solutions such as AWS Redshift. 
  • Ability to configure replication to AWS Redshift from on-prem data warehouse.
     
Special Conditions Required:

 

  • Must pass a background check. 
  • May be required to work after hours and on weekends as needed to apply system patches or migrate/upgrade databases. 
  • Position eligible for remote work with occasional on-campus requirements.
