The UC Davis Western Cooling Efficiency Center (WCEC) works on energy efficiency technology research and transfer related to heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC). Through partnerships with industry and utilities, the WCEC participates in the research and development of new technologies, disseminates information, and implement programs that reduce HVAC system electrical demand and energy consumption in the Western United States. Job Summary

Under direction of senior Western Cooling Efficiency Center (WCEC) researchers, the Research and Development Engineer will be a member of the WCEC research team. Assist senior researchers in designing, conducting, completing, and writing reports on funded projects either directly or using students and/or assistance from other WCEC staff. Develop expertise relative to equipment performance simulation; develop expertise relative to laboratory and field experimentation; assist in producing proposals or presentations for funding agencies; participate in relevant conferences; and author technical and outreach documents. Provide support to senior WCEC staff in the production of required reports that document project results (technical and financial) to project sponsors and develop project materials to inform project sponsors and HVAC industry professionals about research results on the WCEC website and in the WCEC Newsletter.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work flexible schedule including evenings and weekends, usually on short notice.
  • Occasional overnight travel to field sites primarily in California.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent experience and education related to mechanical engineering or HVAC fields.
  • Experience making engineering judgments to plan, execute, and document building energy efficiency research projects.
  • Experience with general construction and experimental equipment such as power tools,
    HVAC equipment, instrumentation, data loggers.
  • Experience in building energy efficiency and related research programs and project analysis.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Expertise in a range of engineering-related tools and applications including MatLab/Python, EnergyPlus, Labview, Excel.

  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact with technical and non-technical individuals to manage, research, secure, and/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems and make public presentations.
  • Skill to interpret, and apply federal/state/university rules, regulations, and policies to specific projects issues
