The full hourly range for this position is $24.77 - $29.49/hr. The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $24.77/hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

The Morrissey lab studies macrophage signaling. The Lab Assistant 3 assists with general lab maintenance, organization and oversight. Performs independent research projects. Lab Assistant 3 has excellent attention to detail, organizational skills and reliability. Balances multiple responsibilities to effectively complete research and lab management responsibilities. Research duties include but are not limited to: standard tissue culture, cloning and bacterial culture, organizing and implementing research experiments, testing, data collection, analysis and evaluation, presentation of research results, manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals, operation of specialized and advanced scientific equipment for data analysis, conducting statistical analysis of data, and conducting literature review. Lab management duties include but are not limited to: maintenance and cataloging of cell lines, plasmids, bacterial stocks, maintenance of all lab databases, scheduling or performing routing maintenance on equipment, chemical inventories, ordering and stocking supplies, monitoring costs, hiring, training, and supervising undergraduate technicians who perform routine media, solution preparation and dish washing for the entire lab.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma.
  • Three years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Some experience in routine molecular biology/cell biology techniques (DNA gels, western blots, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Able to maintain organization and orientation to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS or BA in related field such as biology, chemistry, biological engineering. Anticipated graduation in June 2024 is ok.
  • Experience with cloning (PCR, bacterial culture, minipreps, Sanger sequencing, etc.)
  • Experience with human cell culture.
  • Lab organization/inventory management experience.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

Lab Management- 50%: Ensuring a constant source of common supplies, including ordering reagents and backups when necessary. Monitors lab spending and is involved in decisions-making regarding which specific reagents will be purchased and from which vendor, and handles shipping and receiving reagents or packages. Maintains lab databases, and organizes stock collections (bacteria, plasmids, cell lines, chemicals). Schedules and performs routine maintenance or repairs on lab equipment including computers. Assists in maintaining the lab's small mouse colony.

Perform Research- 40%: Participates in lab meetings and provides feedback for other lab members. Reads and evaluates scientific literature, particularly concerning relevant techniques. Performs experiments including tissue culture, lentiviral work, molecular biology, and harvesting primary tissue from mouse models. If needed, involved in the writing and editing of scientific papers as well as involved in presenting at scientific meetings. Assists in on-going research projects, including providing well organized data for grants and papers. Initiates new projects in consultation with the PI; analyzes data and presents conclusions to lab mates. Maintains an accurate and comprehensive lab notebook.

Supervision and Training- 10%: Oversees undergraduate technicians preparing common reagents (such as buffers, bacterial media and plates), washing and sterilizing glassware. If necessary, individual must perform these duties in the absence of the technicians. Oversees undergraduate technicians in maintaining a clean and organized lab space including autoclaving of BSLII waste. If no technicians are available, individual must perform these duties. Involved in hiring decision for these technicians, including advertising and interviewing. Helps train other laboratory personnel in lab protocols. Maintains laboratory records and ensuring compliance with safety guidelines, including biosafety and chemical waste records, and training other laboratory personnel in safety.
