Department Overview

CA&ES is the physically largest academic unit on the Davis campus, with over 3,700 acres devoted to research and teaching. It includes over 7,000 undergraduates, over 1000 graduate students, 380 faculty and Cooperative Extension Specialists and 250 Academic Federation appointees, over 800 staff involved in administration/finance operations and/or animal and crop care, 20 departments and 18 centers and institutes. CA&ES has more than 1.4 million assignable square feet of teaching, research and administrative space with off-site research and teaching space throughout California. The majority of facility renovations are very complex and highly technical, requiring quickly developing a working knowledge of unique program requirements sufficient to translate functional requirements to project scope. Further technical challenges often involve incorporation of animal and/or plant needs requiring the ability to quickly identify and marshal the necessary resources to ensure that labs, field spaces, teaching spaces and greenhouses are designed as per governmental regulations and campus policies. The college typically has 15 or more renovation and construction projects underway simultaneously ranging in value from $25,000 to $10 million.
