The Early Academic Outreach Program at UCSB provides students, their families, and communities with the resources and services necessary to increase A-G eligibility rates, University applications, and enrollment into post-secondary education. 

EAOP is seeking professionals who are committed to assisting high-achieving and high-potential, first-generation, and low-income students become more academically prepared and have options to successfully matriculate into any of the systems of high education in California including the University of California and California State University systems. 

EAOP achieves this through the collaboration efforts of College Site Coordinators and Academic Services Coordinators in providing college knowledge and academic enrichment services to 9th-12th grade students and intensive academic advising to enroll EAOP students.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the general direction of the EAOP [Associate and Assistant Directors] oversees and coordinates the effective delivery of EAOP UCSB's Dual Service Model at EAOP partnership high schools for 9th -12th-grade students. These services include transcript evaluations, a-g eligibility, and college prep requirements, academic advisement, an overview of four systems of higher education, financial aid awareness, and assistance with the university, financial aid, and college applications. The primary objectives of the model are to increase CSU/UC eligibility and a-g course completion rates; the number of CC students in the transfer path; and the number of students who complete a financial aid application by the end of their senior year. Coordinates annual matriculation visits and academic tours, family conferences, UC Success Night, hosts annual academic recognition events, and EAOP orientation events for school site personnel. Works in conjunction with the EAOP Academic Services Coordinators in the facilitation and coordination of workshops for all partnership school students. Works closely with school-based and/or district pre-college program parent service coordinators to provide specific academic and college preparation workshops, services, events, activities, and conferences that are designed to increase college awareness, leadership, participation, and academic achievement for participating parents and students.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree

1-3 years Knowledge and understanding of K-14 education

1-3 years Knowledge of higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), admissions and financial aid requirements, and the ability to interpret policies to youth, parents, and school representatives

1-3 years Thorough knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements

1-3 years Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged and academically at-risk students regarding postsecondary opportunities and careers.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

Academic Development and College Prep Services - 50% 

Coordinates and implements the EAOP Dual Service model which provides college knowledge and academic enrichment services in the whole school context, as well as intensive services for EAOP, enrolled cohorts at EAOP partnership schools. The dual service model consists of grade-specific services including classroom presentations, A-G on-track services, and all aspects of the university and financial aid applications. Conducts evaluations of academic transcripts for EAOP enrolled students in 9th -12th grades in order to determine UC/CSU eligibility and provide appropriate academic advising for course selection. When possible, utilizes the Transcript Evaluation Service (TES) to provide academic advising to non-EAOP students.Utilizes transcript evaluation to actively recruit 9th -11th grade first-generation high achieving students to be part of the EAOP enrolled cohort. Actively reinforces the importance of successful completion of A-G courses in relation to college preparation and matriculation into a system of post-secondary education after high school. Responsible for increasing participation rates of EAOP students in Transfer Prep services at their local Community Colleges. Assists in the research, design, development, and distribution of academic support and college prep materials for students, parents, and teachers. Coordinates and implements the school site's summer College Readiness Academies (CRA) for incoming seniors. This includes developing the academy's agenda, learning materials, school site logistics, marketing, and the recruitment of EAOP participants. Provides EAOP students with information and materials of pre-college summer enrichment programs or academies at UCSB, the surrounding communities, and across the state of California (COSMOS, Summer Research Academy, Research Mentorship, Early Start, Young Writers Camp, Concurrent Enrollment). Advises all students on all aspects of the admissions process and selection criteria for the University of California, California State University, and private universities and colleges. Provides a series of intensive learning skill workshops and classes targeting EAOP students from 9th-12th grade. Utilizes before, during, and/or after school courses, Saturday academies, AVID classes, or inter-session and summer enrichment academies and programs as delivery mechanisms. Assists in providing academic success workshops such as but not limited to study skills, learning styles, time management, goal setting, note-taking, book reading, reading for comprehension, and writing skills. Assist in the research, design, and implementation of personal insight question in-service workshops for counselors and teachers and hands-on workshops for seniors and juniors for the purpose of writing effective personal insight question responses for University of California and Private College admission processes. Refers students to pre-college programs and services, while working collaboratively to provide academic development services through coordinated, inter-segmental, pre-college efforts at selected partnership schools. 

Liaison w/ School District and Pre-College Personnel - 20%

Actively collaborates with school site counselors, teachers, administrators, and career technicians as well as inter-segmental pre-college program staff in the promotion and provision of EAOP college preparation services. Interacts effectively and diplomatically with school district administrators, key school personnel, and pre-college inter-segmental partners during the coordination and delivery of EAOP services. Provides teachers with EAOP and college preparation materials designed to develop and enhance learning skills and college readiness in the classroom. Learns District and school site policies and procedures, including graduation requirements, accelerated learning options, master schedule formation, and enrollment criteria for college prep course placement.Promotes learning skill workshops and classes, Saturday academies, inter-session, and summer programs targeting EAOP students from 9th-12th grade with school district personnel.

Support & Coordinate Ongoing EAO Initiatives - 20%

Coordinates and implements small and large-scale events at school sites that may take place during evening and weekend hours. Participants include students and parents from EAOP partnership schools. In-service events are open to school site staff across EAOP service areas.Formulates, implements, and monitors annual programming site-budget for respective partnership schools. Coordinates recruitment for and implementation of academic recognitions, UC Success Nights, parent and student conferences, summer readiness academies, and academic enrichment activities. Actively participates in EAOP Department meetings, annual strategic planning, regional meetings, supervisor one-on-one meetings, on-campus and other collaborative opportunities, as well as selected school-site committees as needed. Coordinates and/or supports existing parent services that include academic and college preparation services, events, activities, and conferences that are designed to increase college awareness, participation, and academic achievement for participating parents and students. Assists with information dissemination and efforts to increase awareness and participation rates in school site college preparation activities, events, and programs. Provides support to students in all aspects of the matriculation process into an institution of higher education including but not limited to entry course assessments, housing, and financial aid needs. Increases collaboration with local Community College staff in order to provide EAOP and non-EAOP community college-bound students information and academic advising on how to gain transfer prep support services once enrolled at the CC. Coordinates UC/CSU campus visits for 9th-12th grade EAOP students. Participates in annual Counselors Conferences for both the University of California, California State University systems, California's Student Aid Commission FAFSA/Dream Act application workshops, and UCSB Reader training among other required training.

Program Analysis and Evaluation - 10%

Staff will maintain and collect academic data related to EAOP participants, students in general, and parents including the collection and maintenance of school-site and student-based performance data for use in the development and evaluation of enrichment program services, activities, and events. Staff is responsible for weekly reporting that includes the documentation of services provided across partnership school sites, participating student information, and other information necessary for stakeholder and annual reporting. Reporting also includes services provided to parents and school site personnel. Maintains EAOP school rosters and coordinates updates of demographic information in the program's web-based database. Secures program applications and parent consent forms for all EAOP enrolled students. Assists in the design, maintenance, and assessment of service satisfaction levels of school partners, including teachers, counselors, administrators, students, parents, and other associated stakeholders. Prepare and submit comprehensive mid-year and annual written reports documenting service outcomes, evaluation measures, and recommendations that focus on how to improve the quality of EAOP services.Utilizes web-based resources such as UC's Information Center, CSAC Cal Grant Dashboard, CSU Enrollment Dashboards, and DataQuest among other data systems to generate annual reports and assess participation rates.
