We are looking for an individual with a strong passion for avian and terrestrial wildlife to join our team as a Wildlife Biologist in our Calgary office. This position offers a wide variety of field and office work on a diverse range of projects that include biophysical inventories, environmental assessments, and monitoring of environmental impacts. While we have a very wide variety of projects across western and northern Canada, we are looking for someone that has a background and experience in coordinating and completing wildlife surveys and environmental assessments for mining, transmission, renewable energy, and transportation corridor projects.

Although the position will be based in either Edmonton or Calgary, travel throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Northern Canada is anticipated.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinating and leading wildlife surveys following the Alberta Sensitive Species Inventory Guidelines (e.g. bird migration, breeding birds, burrowing owls, sharp-tailed grouse and sensitive raptors).
- Provide mentoring for and conducting pre-disturbance nest sweeps and construction monitoring.
- Leading amphibian surveys (acoustic and visual searches) and performing amphibian salvages.
- Developing and/or conducting avian, reptile and mammal surveys.
- Conducting data entry, reviews and analysis to support environmental assessments and inform risk identification to develop mitigation strategies.
- Designing and proposing wildlife field and desktop review studies to meet regulatory requirements, including conducting consultation with regulators.
- Completing environmental impact assessments.
- Preparing reports related to siting evaluation, environmental planning/permitting, and/or environmental reviews.
- Programing and deploying autonomous recording units (ARU) and/or wildlife cameras.
- Developing environmental protection/mitigation plans.
- Preparing proposals including scopes of work, budget estimates and formal RFP submissions.
- Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and technical experts in biology and environmental science. And
- Staying current on technical and sector-based trends and legislation at the municipal, provincial and federal level.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in biology, environmental science, ecology, natural resource science or related studies.
- Registered as a Professional Biologist in Alberta.
- Minimum of 5+ years environmental consulting experience completing and managing wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, and construction monitoring.
- The ability to positively identify wildlife species including birds by sight and sound. Multiple years of wildlife and survey experience are preferred.
- Familiarity with species habitat requirements and identifying prairie habitat types (e.g., native grassland).
- Demonstrated knowledge of provincial and federal wildlife legislation and regulatory requirements, primarily in western Canada.
- Possession of a valid driver's licence with no restrictions.
- Strong wildlife identification skills for avian species in prairie, parkland, boreal, mountain and northern habitats.
- Experience developing budgets and scope of work for projects related to wildlife surveys and assessments.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of municipal, provincial, and federal environmental permitting and regulatory requirements related to wildlife in western Canada and a proven track record in their application.
- Demonstrated proficiency with industry standard resources, tools and best practices as well as provincial environmental legislation and policy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with clients, regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and the public. Public consultation experience is an asset.
- Aptitude to follow protocols and work efficiently, independently, and under time constraints while in the field and office in order to meet deliverable targets and deadlines.
- A strong track record in Health and Safety management.
- Safety certifications such as First Aid are considered an asset.
- Ability to travel and work in remote locations; and
- Ability to work long days (up to 12 hours) in the field and occasionally for long durations away from home (up to 21 days).
