Position Summary:
As a Transportation Engineering Intern, you will gain real-world professional experience by contributing to active transportation projects and learning how engineering concepts are applied in practice. You will be mentored by professional engineers who will support your development, answer day-to-day questions, and help you build problem-solving skills while completing assigned tasks or portions of projects.

The Transportation Engineering Intern supports the planning and design of transportation infrastructure projects for public- and private-sector clients. The intern will be exposed to a variety of roadway and traffic engineering projects, assisting with technical tasks while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. This position is designed to complement academic coursework with practical, hands-on experience.

Essential Job Functions:

• Supporting roadway and traffic engineering design tasks from concept through final design.
• Assisting with preparation of roadway layouts, exhibits, and plan elements using AutoCAD.
• Helping develop traffic control concepts and basic design details.
• Participating in data collection efforts such as traffic counts, field measurements, and site visits.
• Assisting with quantity takeoffs and basic cost estimating tasks.
• Preparing figures, exhibits, and supporting documentation for reports and plan sets.
• Coordinating with project team members to meet quality standards and deadlines.
• Learning and applying federal, state, and local transportation design standards.
• Execute work in accordance with internal quality procedures, applicable codes, legislation, and industry standards to ensure project compliance and technical excellence.
• Actively pursue continuous learning opportunities to maintain a high degree of technical knowledge and professional competency in structural engineering.
• Promote and maintain a culture of safety by working in a safe manner at all times and promptly reporting all health and safety incidents or concerns.
• Perform additional tasks as required to support project goals, team objectives, and company initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

• Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or Transportation Engineering.
• Developing proficiency with AutoCAD 
• Strong computer skills and willingness to learn new software tools.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Active and clear driver's license, including a successful clearance of a Motor Vehicle history check.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Civil 3D exposure.
• Prior coursework or internship experience related to transportation or roadway design.
• Interest in traffic engineering, roadway design, or multimodal transportation.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while performing computer-based tasks, attending meetings, or preparing design documentation.
• Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate computers, printers, and other office equipment.
• Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, specifications, and computer screens for extended periods.
• Ability to clearly communicate through speech, hearing, and written correspondence in person, virtually, and via telephone.
• Ability to travel to and from project sites, client meetings, and other offices as required.
• Physical capability to walk, stand, climb stairs or ladders, and navigate uneven terrain, active construction sites, and partially completed structures.
• Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials, drawings, or equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
• Capacity to use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, vests, and steel-toed boots when required.
• Tolerance for varying environmental conditions, including exposure to weather, noise, and dust during site visits.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

• The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting with a collaborative, team-oriented atmosphere.
• Work involves extensive use of computers, digital communication tools, and design software in an open or hybrid office environment.
• This role requires frequent interaction with project teams, clients, consultants, and other stakeholders through in-person meetings, video conferences, and phone calls.
• Periodic travel to construction sites, client offices, and off-site meetings is required.
• Work at project sites may involve exposure to active construction environments, including noise, dust, varying temperatures, and weather conditions.
• The position requires adaptability to shifting project priorities, client expectations, and multidisciplinary coordination.
• Work may occasionally involve tight deadlines, multiple concurrent projects, and high attention to detail under time-sensitive conditions.
• Collaboration across multiple time zones or with remote team members may be necessary, depending on project scope and firm structure.

Additional Information:

• This is a full- or part-time, temporary summer position with a flexible schedule that generally aligns with core business hours, typically between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position may require occasional extended hours to meet project milestones, deadlines.
• This position is considered hybrid, with a 60% office presence and 40% remote presence (ability to work from a home location). This arrangement is subject to review and may change based on project need or at the company's discretion.    

Anticipated Hiring Range: 

• $20.00 - $25.00/hour. Please note that this range reflects the pay scale that Tetra Tech reasonably expects to pay for the role. The salary will also depend on various factors, such as job duties and requirements, and relevant experience and skills.
