Position Summary:
The Mechanical Engineer plays a key role in the planning, design, and implementation of mechanical systems for buildings and infrastructure projects within an integrated Architectural/Engineering (A/E) environment. This position involves collaborating closely with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers, and other design professionals to develop innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective mechanical solutions that meet project goals and client requirements.

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for performing detailed design and analysis of HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and energy-efficiency requirements. They prepare engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports; coordinate with multidisciplinary teams; and support construction administration activities through submittal review, site visits, and field problem-solving.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist in developing and implementing innovative mechanical engineering solutions tailored to K-12 schools and municipal facilities.
  • Assist in conducting detailed energy modeling and simulations to optimize building performance and energy efficiency.
  • Collaborate with architects and engineers (MEP), and other stakeholders to assist in integrating mechanical systems with sustainable design principles.
  • Assist in analyzing existing mechanical systems and recommend upgrades or replacements to improve energy use and reduce operational costs.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in sustainable mechanical systems and energy modeling.
  • Assist in preparing technical reports, energy analysis documentation, and cost-benefit assessments for clients.
  • Assist in the design and specification of HVAC, plumbing, and renewable energy systems for educational and municipal projects.
  • Support compliance with local, state, and federal energy codes and sustainability standards.
  • Participate in project meetings, presentations, and client consultations to communicate technical concepts effectively.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards. 
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field with 8+ years of related work experience.
  • Experience working on K-12 school projects is a plus.
  • Licensed PE (Professional Engineer)
  • Proficiency in Revit, and good knowledge of industry software, including Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Ability to rapidly master energy modeling software (such as eQUEST and IESVE) and managing energy modeling projects. 
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems.
  • Understanding of sustainable and renewable energy technologies (solar, geothermal, wind, etc.). 
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong data analysis and report writing skills.
  • Continuous learning mindset to stay updated on emerging technologies
  • Active and clear driver's license, including a successful clearance of a Motor Vehicle history check.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while performing computer-based tasks, attending meetings, or preparing design documentation.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate computers, printers, and other office equipment.
  • Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, specifications, and computer screens for extended periods.
  • Ability to clearly communicate through speech, hearing, and written correspondence in person, virtually, and via telephone.
  • Ability to travel to and from project sites, client meetings, and other offices as required.
  • Physical capability to walk, stand, climb stairs or ladders, and navigate uneven terrain, active construction sites, and partially completed structures.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry materials, drawings, or equipment weighing up to approximately 25 pounds.
  • Capacity to use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, vests, and steel-toed boots when required.
  • Tolerance for varying environmental conditions, including exposure to weather, noise, and dust during site visits.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting with a collaborative, team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Work involves extensive use of computers, digital communication tools, and design software in an open or hybrid office environment.
  • This role requires frequent interaction with project teams, clients, consultants, and other stakeholders through in-person meetings, video conferences, and phone calls.
  • Periodic travel to construction sites, client offices, and off-site meetings is required.
  • Work at project sites may involve exposure to active construction environments, including noise, dust, varying temperatures, and weather conditions.
  • The position requires adaptability to shifting project priorities, client expectations, and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Work may occasionally involve tight deadlines, multiple concurrent projects, and high attention to detail under time-sensitive conditions.
  • Collaboration across multiple time zones or with remote team members may be necessary, depending on project scope and firm structure.

Additional Information:

  • This is a full-time, regular position, with typically standard working hours between 8am – 5pm, Monday through Friday. However, this position may require occasional extended hours to meet project milestones, deadlines, or client needs.
  • This position is considered hybrid, with a 50% office presence, 10% site visits and/or client meetings, and 40% remote presence (ability to work from a home location). This arrangement is subject to review and may change based on project need or at the company's discretion.    

Anticipated Hiring Range: 

  • $90,000 - $100,000. Please note that this range reflects the pay scale that Tetra Tech reasonably expects to pay for the role. The salary will also depend on various factors, such as job duties and requirements, and relevant experience and skills.
