Director of Nature

We are seeking a visionary Director of Nature to lead, manage, and expand our talented team of ecologists and arborists. This role demands a motivated leader who can secure an increasing market share of high-profile projects, all while fostering a culture of purpose and integrity.

We are looking for a leader ready to make a significant impact on sustainable projects nationwide.

The Nature team sits within the Environment, Sustainability and Planning (ESP) team of Tetra Tech. The role will involve team leadership, strategic planning and growth, project direction, technical delivery, client management and will offer an opportunity to influence and have impact across the business.

Tetra Tech Nature features a 100-strong team of ecological and arboriculture consultants delivering surveying, assessment, and advisory services across the UK and internationally. Our work encompasses everything from small planning applications to large-scale infrastructure projects and expert witness roles. We work with clients across diverse sectors including defence, local authority, transport, retail, housing, commercial buildings, industry, water, renewables, data centres and developers. The team work on projects based across the UK and internationally.

The team has established workloads and has an excellent reputation operating with high technical standards and driving thought leadership through involvement in industry working groups, seminars and conferences. With energy, insight and the right strategic leadership, the team offers a solid position on which to develop and build an exciting future alongside the other parts of ESP and the Tetra Tech organisation.

Our award-winning team supports local to national projects through feasibility, planning, construction, post construction phases and beyond. Our services include:

  • Ecological and Protected species surveys and licensing

  • Habitat Regulation Assessment

  • Natural capital and ecosystem services analysis and assessment

  • Ecological impact assessment and mitigation

  • Biodiversity net gain assessment and offsetting

  • Water and nutrient management

  • Habitat mapping and botanical surveys

  • Invasive species surveys

  • Ecological clerk of works

  • Arboriculture

We are looking for a Team Leader that can grow these services further as well as diversify into other areas that maximises our Leading with Science® strategy such as:

  • Landscape scale habitat creation and restoration

  • Environmental data analysis and digital technology

  • Climate change adaptation and resilience

  • Ecosystem services

  • Aquatic ecology

 

Key Responsibilities 1. Leadership and Management
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Nature team growing the team, expanding our capabilities, taking responsibility for succession planning and diversifying our offering.

  • Full P&L accountability for the discipline delivering profitable performance and ensuring the implementation of risk, financial and cost controls.

  • Compliance with commercial and operational governance processes.

  • Play a full role in your capacity as a member of the ESP Senior Management Team (SMT).

  • Development of business plans for innovative opportunities, R&D proposals and diversification opportunities.

2. Project Direction and Management
  • Oversee the planning, scoping and execution of Nature projects ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, policies and guidelines.

  • Have a strong understanding of contract law.

  • Allocate resources effectively, monitor project progress and focus on timely delivery of high-quality reports ensuring an excellent customer experience and ensuring project lifecycle governance and compliance.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to coordinate team and project activities. This includes with ESP SMT and financial support teams.

  • Drive a strong culture of H&S for the team.

3. Technical Expertise
  • As the technical expert and leader of the Nature team, ensuring the team consistently delivers technically excellent work.

  • Provide industry thought leadership.

  • Provide expert guidance and support to the Nature team.

  • Championing professional development for all.

  • Encourage a culture of innovation.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of technical considerations and overlap with other environmental teams such as Planning, Sustainability, EIA and Air Quality.

4. Business Development
  • Lead major tenders and frameworks across ESP and wider Tetra Tech.

  • Lead and co-ordinate business development and client relationship management, promoting Nature team services and the wider business, to actively raise our profile both internally and externally.

  • Develop your own portfolio and pipeline of fee-earning work and client relationships.

  • Promotion of the Nature team demonstrating thought leadership through published articles, papers and conference slots.

  • Responsible for managing executive level and partner relationships.

 

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Exceptional communication and influence across diverse audiences.

  • Proven ability to unite vision with practical, results-driven delivery.

  • A degree in Ecology or a related discipline. A post graduate qualification is preferred such as CEcol or CEnv.

  • Membership of CIEEM, preferably with Fellow status.

  • Extensive experience in environmental/ecological consultancy with a track record of successfully leading a large team of Ecologists and Arborists managing a diversity of projects across a number of sectors.

  • Excellent interpersonal, business development and communication skills and with ideally a wide client base.

  • Expert witness and conference presentation experience.

  • International experience.

  • Experienced in developing innovative research proposals and seeing them through to publication/delivery.

 

Location

The role offers a flexible work location within the UK, with the understanding that in-office presence is required as dictated by business, client, and team needs. The Nature team's core office locations are situated in:
