Tetra Tech is currently seeking a Clean Water Act Scientist/Engineer, who can apply their technical expertise to help solve complex water resources technical and policy issues. This position would report to our Fairfax, VA office. 


We are in search of a highly motivated team member to join our family of scientists and engineers to lead and support our work on projects involving Clean Water Act program implementation, nutrient pollution, water quality standards, environmental policy, watershed planning, point source discharge permitting and controls, and nonpoint source pollution assessment and control.

In this mid-level consulting position, you will have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge, technical expertise, management skills, and previous work experience to real-world water quality issues, while serving our federal, state, tribal, local, and private sector clients and mentoring junior staff on the team. Your work will involve routine and non-routine assignments related to water quality projects of substantial variety and complexity.

Your responsibilities will include performing tasks to lead and support environmental projects, including:

  • Developing technical analyses to support water pollution-reduction activities at federal, state, and local levels
  • Providing engineering and other technical analyses to support federal, state, local, and private clients in identifying Clean Water Act compliance options
  • Estimating effectiveness and cost of water pollution control approaches for point and nonpoint sources
  • Reviewing technical information from journal articles, federal and state reports, and other sources
  • Synthesizing information and developing written products (e.g., water resource reports, training modules, research summaries)
  • Reviewing written analyses and summaries developed by others
  • Supporting development of and providing technical input related to EPA policies
  • Implementing QA/QC policies/procedures to meet federal and state research requirements
  • Serving as a project manager, monitoring budgets and schedules, and ensuring completion of deliverables 
  • Managing junior- and mid-level staff both as part of a project and as a supervisor
  • Playing a key role in promoting and supporting business development
  • Conducting client communication and representing Tetra Tech in client meetings
  • Being able to provide basic facilitation and give technical presentations to a broad audience

 

You'll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in biology, environmental science, ecology, environmental engineering, or a related scientific/engineering field
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience minimum
  • Knowledge of federal and state clean water legislation and regulations 
  • Professional experience related to the Clean Water Act, nutrients, water quality standards, environmental policy, watershed planning, agriculture, point source discharge permitting and control, and nonpoint source pollution assessment and control
  • Interest and previous experience in managing contracts and staff
  • Demonstrated management experience related to multiple, complex, and simultaneous projects
  • Ability to identify and target opportunities and build new work
  • Leader and team player possessing strong planning and organizational skills 
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other applications
  • Excellent research, technical writing, and verbal communication skills/experience
  • Able to handle multiple technical tasks/projects at once on time and on budget.
  • Highly dependable, detail-oriented, flexible, and responsive to tight or changing client-driven deadlines
  • Strong work ethic and problem-solving skills
  • Able to interact well with coworkers and existing clients in a professional and confident manner
  • Excitement to work in a dynamic work environment 
  • Willingness to learn new skills
