Description

Tetra Tech is seeking an Air Dispersion Modeler with a background in atmospheric dispersion and fire & explosion modeling to join our team in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, or remotely. We are seeking a positive, self-starting individual with excellent problem-solving abilities and strong communication skills that will demonstrate an ability to work on highly dynamic and interactive projects both independently and as part of a team. Working with public and private sectors, RPS uses a variety of numerical modeling tools to identify potential trajectory, fate, and effects of contaminants that may be transported within the atmosphere over terrestrial, coastal, and marine environments. Supporting industry and government clients, we assess real-world and hypothetical releases associated with the production, transport, and storage of a range of different products using a variety of modeling tools and approaches to assess risk. There is a large focus on hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and ammonia, as well as numerous other substances. The successful candidate would work with the team on tasks such as: data preparation and analysis for use in modeling; computational modeling; visualization of results; preparation of reports; and research, validation, and automation of modeling tools.

Your Role:

  • Performing atmospheric dispersion modeling and fire/explosion analyses for release simulations from pipelines, tanks, facilities, wells, vessels, etc.
  • Develop modeling scenarios to assess hypothetical and real-world impacts relevant to the hazardous releases
  • Assess impacts to human health/safety and environmental effects from hazardous releases
  • Use GIS to review/gather related project input data and to prepare basic maps and GIS output data
  • Use/enhance/develop tools to analyze, interpret, and present model results
  • QA/QC model inputs and results
  • Prepare report quality figures, tables, charts, maps, etc. of model inputs and results
  • Perform modeling studies using public, commercial, and proprietary model software
  • Prepare technical reports
  • Evaluate, validate, and make recommendations on new approaches and modeling tools
  • Assess existing procedures and develop new approaches for air modeling projects
  • Support and develop tools for data processing, visualization, or other automation to streamline efficiency and standardize workflows
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree (or equivalent experience) in a field such as chemistry, engineering, meteorology, or other physical/environmental sciences with at least 2 years of relevant professional atmospheric dispersion modeling experience (consulting experience strongly preferred)
  • Understanding of atmospheric dispersion, fire, and explosion processes, including thermodynamics, chemistry, impacts
  • Experience with air models such as: EPA SLAB, ALOHA, CHARM, CALPUFF, or other puff model, AERMOD, Phast, Canary, or equivalent
  • Understanding of common criteria used to assess effects of exposure to chemicals, fire, and explosions
  • Proficiency in scientific programming in Python
  • Advanced experience in Microsoft Excel
  • Basic proficiency with ArcGIS Desktop or Pro – familiar with standard data types, basic GIS processing/editing, map making, and geoprocessing
  • Strong problem solving, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to function as a contributing team member and independently when needed
  • High attention to detail and quality
  • Effective technical writing skills and clear verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Experience with pipelines or other petroleum infrastructure, especially related to risk assessment, process hazard analysis, or other, preferred
  • Experience related specifically to atmospheric dispersion modeling of hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen preferred
  • Experience applying Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) to assess complex dispersion modeling scenarios that factor in terrain or other obstacles preferred
