Overview

The Department of State's Attorneys and Sheriffs is hiring for the position of SAS Legislative, Policy and Public Records Attorney. The position represents the Department in the Vermont Legislature, working with State's Attorneys, Sheriffs and other SAS staff to formulate policy positions and legislative proposals; researching, preparing policy papers, testifying; preparing weekly summary reports; responding to inquiries from legislators, staff, JFO, partner organizations; other tasks relating to legislative issues. Serves on study committees and working groups relating to the Department and criminal justice matters. Assists the Department's Sr. Appellate Attorney as needed. Serves as the Department's Public Records Officer (or oversees PRR work done by other staff); works with the Secretary of State Archives and Records Administration staff. Trains SAS staff in public records and archiving. Works with SAS IT to ensure case management system effectively captures required data for reporting to legislature and other entities.  Works on updating or creating charge codes.  Serves as the Department's Bias Incident Coordinator.  Assists with various training projects.  Participates in advising SAS staff on legal issues. Will be assigned to create and update Department policies on various topics.  May be assigned to assist with legal matters or hearings. Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

The position is full time, and is eligible for State benefits that include annual, sick, and personal leave, state holidays, retirement, health insurance (80% employer paid), life insurance, dental after 6 months, and long-term disability after one year. The position is an Exempt position, and not covered by the bargaining agreement.  The salary range of $30.67 to $60.74 based upon relevant legal experience and admission to the Vermont Bar.This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney interested in criminal justice work. The incumbent may be assigned other tasks at the direction of the Executive Director. It is expected that the incumbent work effectively with supervisors, co-workers, legislators, state and federal government staff, law enforcement and community agencies, and other stakeholders. Pressures from workload and deadlines should be expected. Private means transportation must be available.

Compensation

The salary range of $30.67 to $60.74 based upon relevant legal experience and admission to the Vermont Bar.This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney interested in criminal justice work.

Minimum Requirements

J.D. degree and admission to the Vermont Bar. An individual who has read the law in Vermont and been admitted to the Vermont bar is eligible to apply. An individual pending bar results or admission to the Vermont bar may be considered, but will be required to pass the bar and be admitted in Vermont within a reasonable timeframe as determined by the State's Attorney in order to continue employment. Courtroom and jury trial experience is desirable.
