Overview

The Vermont Department of Labor is committed to improving the lives of Vermonters by connecting job seekers and career advancers with training opportunities and employers. We are currently seeking a motivated, customer-focused individual to join our team as a Job Center Specialist I (JCS I) in the Southwest Region and located in the Bennington office. 

 

This position serves as the primary point of contact at the regional workforce development job center, representing the Department to the public and playing a key role in triaging internal and external community programs and services. As a JCS I, you will provide front-line support to individuals seeking employment and training assistance, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. 

 

In this role, you will be responsible for greeting and assisting walk-in visitors, promoting awareness of the Department's services, and conducting initial interviews to assess individual needs. You will guide customers through available resources and services, make referrals to partner organizations and community programs, and document interactions in customer service records. Additionally, you will provide coaching and support to individuals as they navigate employment-related challenges, drawing on your knowledge of community partnerships and service networks. 

 

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, empathy in service delivery, and a strong commitment to operational excellence. You should be comfortable using Microsoft Office products and be willing to support others in developing basic computer skills. Under the supervision of the Regional Manager or Supervisor, you will use sound judgment and initiative to deliver high-quality customer service.

Environmental Factors

Interviews clients who are often under significant personal and financial burden, and who may exhibit significant stress and anxiety and may exhibit uncooperative or angry behaviors. It is expected that JCS I staff will engage all clients in a manner that exhibits professionalism, sensitivity, fairness, tact and diplomacy, and helps clients understand the services available to them through VDOL programs. Supportive attitude and actions are expected to be demonstrated in dealing with clients.

Position is assigned to a regional office location, but there may be times when travel between multiple regional locations will be required based on Department needs.  May include travel to employers' worksites, job fairs/hiring events, schools and community partner meetings. Valid driver's license and private means of transportation is required.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year or more experience in customer service, employment services, human services, human resources, or a closely related field.
