Overview

The Air Quality and Climate Division of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation is recruiting a temporary Air Quality Environmental Analyst in the Monitoring Section. The Air Quality and Climate Division implements state and federal clean air laws and regulations and works with federal, regional, state, and local agencies and organizations to protect the public and the environment from the adverse effects of air pollution. The Division is comprised of five sections: Planning, Ambient Monitoring, Mobile Sources, Permitting, and Compliance.  

 

This Environmental Analyst will work both in the field and in the office in a section of highly trained and talented air quality analysts. The primary job responsibilities include sample set-up and recovery at air quality monitoring stations across Vermont, maintenance of air quality monitoring equipment, performance of audits and calibrations, data entry, and troubleshooting equipment failures.

 

Candidates should be comfortable with driving long distances to visit air monitoring sites, up to 5 hours per day, 2-3 days per week. Candidates should also be comfortable climbing ladders, carrying equipment up to 50 lbs., and working outside; occasionally in inclement weather.  

 

This position will work mainly out of the central office in Montpelier, VT, and will also perform field work in locations throughout Vermont. 

 

Preferred experience

  • Competency with mechanical tools (both hand tools and power tools) and excellent troubleshooting or deductive reasoning skills
  • Background in air quality and the Clean Air Act
  • Knowledge of air quality and air pollution principles, particularly related to ambient air monitoring
  • Technical expertise with ambient air monitoring techniques and equipment
  • Familiarity with MS Office products, particularly Word and Excel.

Temporary work is typically for variable hours, and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Environmental Factors

Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field.

 

OR

 

Three (3) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
