The Joint, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Interagency Division provides expert support services to a range of customers spanning across the Department of Defense, Federal Civilian, and international markets. JOID provides a diverse portfolio of analytical and programmatic capabilities to help our customers make informed decisions on their most challenging issues.
SPA provides critical decision support to enabling and executing a strategy of technological superiority and enabling the delivery and sustainment of secure, resilient, and preeminent capabilities to the warfighter quickly and cost effectively. Our team of experienced military, technical, and operations research analysts is skilled in evaluating military problems, identifying the driving factors, devising innovative approaches, collecting applicable data, developing necessary software tools, and performing thorough and timely assessments to inform technology and acquisition governance decisions to ensure U.S. military forces retain military superiority in the future.
We have a near-term need for a Sr. Technical Subject Matter Expert to provide onsite support out of DARPA in Arlington, VA.
Responsibilities
The candidate will support the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in addressing scientific and technical frameworks for investments in high-risk, high-reward research and development (R&D) projects. The candidate will assist Tactical Technology Office (TTO) leadership and/or Program Managers with an emphasis on developing and initiating new efforts, and also in overseeing project execution and transition. Proactive oral and written communication with key stakeholders will be an important determinant of success. The candidate is expected to thrive as part of a strongly collaborative scientific and technical team, but also to act independently to complete time-critical tasks. These include scientific and technical analysis, development of broadly understandable explanatory documentation for deeply technical programs, monitoring of ongoing activities, and reporting to Program Managers and/or office leadership. This position also includes identifying national security challenges and participating in the development of portfolio-level strategies to address them.
This is a full-time on-site position in Arlington, VA. Up to 15% travel may be required.
Qualifications
Required:
- PhD in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM); a Bachelor's or Master's degree with 20+ years of uniquely qualifying experience may be considered at the Government's discretion.
- 20+ years of experience in a relevant technical or scientific field.
- Universally recognized as an expert or lead authority in a highly specified area, with demonstrated experience in advanced techniques, theories, and practices.
- 10+ years of extensive background and knowledge of one or more DARPA programs or similar advanced R&D efforts.
- Demonstrated experience managing or executing R&D programs from inception to closeout.
- Active DoW Secret or TS/SCI clearance may be required.
- Self-starter with excellent oral and written communication skills, with mature judgment and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with software suites such as Microsoft 365, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Ability to work fully onsite at DARPA's HQ in Arlington, VA.
Desired:
- 5+ years of experience working with or for DARPA.
- Prior experience as a DARPA Program Manager or a senior SETA contractor.
Pay Range Information

Salaries are commensurate with experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. Virginia, Pay Transparency Salary range: USD $180,000.00/Yr. - USD $225,000.00/Yr.
