Description

Description

Overview: Systems Engineer

This position provides specialized engineering support for spectrum monitoring, RF signal analysis, and electromagnetic environment characterization in the Expeditionary Electromagnetic Warfare Division (MXQ) at NSWC Crane. The role is critical to the development, testing, and evaluation of Electronic Warfare (EW) systems, requiring the operation of advanced instrumentation to identify signal characteristics, mitigate interference, and validate system performance in complex over-the-air and laboratory environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead spectrum monitoring and electromagnetic environment characterization across laboratory, field, and over-the-air test environments.
  • Configure and operate high-precision test equipment, including spectrum analyzers, software-defined radios (SDRs), signal generators, receivers, and complex antenna arrays.
  • Collect and process RF data to identify modulation characteristics, interference sources, frequency activity, and anomalous emitters.
  • Evaluate RF signal behavior, propagation patterns, and antenna placement to optimize EW system performance and wireless communication protocols.
  • Support Spectrum Supportability and Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) assessments for platforms, subsystems, and integrated mission equipment.
  • Conduct RF coverage analysis and antenna placement modeling, validating simulation results against empirical test data.
  • Drive the technical execution of test events, including test planning, setup, data collection, and comprehensive post-test reporting.
  • Provide engineering recommendations to enhance spectrum monitoring rigor, data accuracy, and test repeatability.
  • Author technical reports, test procedures, data summaries, and engineering judgment inputs for Government review.
  • Ensure all technical products and collected signal data are handled, marked, and stored in accordance with CUI, OPSEC, and security classification guides.

Qualifications

Educational Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline (relevant technical experience may be considered in lieu of degree).

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in RF engineering, signal analysis, wireless communications, or the testing and sustainment of EW systems.
  • Strong command of frequency management, bandwidth optimization, modulation techniques, propagation loss, and noise characterization.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers (VNAs), and signal collection systems.
  • Ability to interpret complex RF data from diverse environments and translate findings into actionable engineering recommendations.
  • Exceptional technical writing skills with the ability to document risks, assumptions, and findings for technical and programmatic stakeholders.
  • Active Secret Security Clearance.
