The Senior Vehicle Mechanical Engineering Technical Specialist serves as a senior subject matter expert (SME) in one or more vehicle engineering domains—such as body, chassis, mechanisms, or general mechanical systems—while maintaining broad technical awareness across other disciplines.
This role provides cross-functional technical leadership, consulting expertise, and governance of engineering standards to ensure robust, manufacturable, and validated designs throughout all program phases.
The Specialist partners closely with Lead Vehicle Engineers (LVEs), Program Management, and Functional Managers to align technical decisions with vehicle-level performance, cost, timing, and quality objectives. The position combines hands-on technical depth with the cross-system perspective required to support an engineering services organization, mentoring engineers, leading reviews, and driving continuous improvement in methods, tools, and standards.
As a Senior Vehicle Mechanical Engineering Technical Specialist, you will:
- Serve as the company's senior SME in one or more domains (body, chassis, mechanisms, or general mechanical systems). Lead design reviews, guide integration decisions, and ensure system performance, safety, and manufacturability requirements are met
- Develop, maintain, and govern engineering standards, validation methods, and lessons learned for assigned technical areas. Contribute to the creation of consistent, cross-disciplinary best practices
- Provide consulting and technical leadership to internal teams and customers, presenting analysis, authoring technical procedures, and supporting design reviews and trade-off discussions
- Collaborate with LVEs, CAE, Manufacturing, and Program Management to balance performance, cost, and timing trade-offs; support vehicle-level attribute achievement (ride, handling, NVH, durability, safety)
- Mentor and develop Technical Specialists, Lead Engineers, and design staff, ensuring consistent technical execution and knowledge transfer across programs
- Lead root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives for recurring technical or manufacturing issues, driving lessons learned and process enhancements
- Support quoting, scoping, and risk assessments during new business pursuits; ensure alignment of technical deliverables to customer expectations
- Stay current with emerging technologies, materials, and methods through research, industry events, and benchmarking to guide future innovation and capability growth
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Materials Engineering (or related field).
- 10+ years of experience in at least one major vehicle engineering domain (body, chassis, mechanisms, or mechanical systems)
- Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional design and validation efforts across programs
- Proven record of technical consulting, mentorship, and problem solving in an applied engineering environment
- Proficiency in CAD (CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks) and familiarity with DFMEA, DVP, and design release processes
- Expert-level technical capability in one or more vehicle domains, with working knowledge across other systems
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, material selection, and tolerance design.
- Skilled in problem solving, root cause analysis, and risk-based engineering (DFMEA/PFMEA).
- Excellent communication, presentation, and consulting skills—able to articulate complex data to internal and customer audiences
- Proven ability to influence design and program decisions across teams
- Proficient in CAD/CAE environments and hands-on validation or prototype development
- Master's degree in Engineering or related field
- Experience in engineering services, prototype builds, or OEM/Tier-1 development programs
- History of defining and governing engineering standards and validation methods
- Experience mentoring technical talent and supporting organizational capability development
- Familiarity with cross-system integration (body–chassis–mechanical–electrical interfaces)
- Knowledge of NVH, durability, kinematics, or vehicle dynamics principles
- Experience applying design-for-manufacture and design-for-serviceability concepts
- Proven ability to define technology strategies or process improvements that elevate organizational capability
- Strong customer-facing presence in technical reviews, negotiations, and consulting engagements
