Job Summary

To care and evaluate the neonate during its transition to extra uterine life, under the supervision of the Nurse Manager. Care will be delivered for the neonate in the LDR suite and continue on the Mom/Baby unit.

Accountabilities

Educates obstetric patients and families about the benefits of breastfeeding, the importance of exclusive breastmilk feeding for the first six months of life, the importance of skin-to-skin care, the importance of non-separation of mother and baby, and the transition period.  20%

Supports each patient and their family through the transition period by reinforcing education and coordinating information and care with a team of physicians and allied health care professionals. 10%

Assesses, develops, plans, implements, and evaluates care for the full term neonate (>37wks gestation) and late preterm neonate after delivery during its transition to extrauterine life. 20%

Reviews maternal medical and obstetric conditions influencing newborn adaptation. 5%

Utilizes thorough assessment skills and knowledge of the interaction amongst the respiratory, cardiovascular, thermoregulatory, and immunologic systems as they undergo significant physiologic changes during the transition from fetal to neonatal life. 20%

Ability to recognize alterations from normal transition. Proficient in neonatal resuscitation skills. 5%  

Assists the primary nurse at delivery in assigning APGARs, facilitating early and frequent skin-to-skin care, and initiating early breastfeeding or expression of breast milk. Assists the primary nurse as she completes newborn identification procedures. 5%

Completes the initial head-to-toe assessment on the neonate. Obtains neonatal vital signs and measurements (weight, length, head circumference) per protocol. 10%

Collaborates with nursing and medical personnel in Women's Services to evaluate and improve patient outcomes. 5%

Minimum Requirements

Associate's Degree in Nursing. BSN preferred.

One year experience as a registered nurse.

Previous perinatal experience preferred

Required Licensure/Registrations/Certifications

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in South Carolina

In Lieu Of The Above Minimum Requirements

In lieu of 1 year of registered nurse experience, will accept successful completion of the Prisma Health Nurse Residency Program or successful completion of a comparable residency from another organization.

In lieu of 1 year of registered nurse experience, will accept 1 year of licensed practical nurse (LPN) experience.

Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

Must complete 20 hours of breastfeeding education.
