Job Summary:
To develop in each student the skills of critical thinking and to help students learn horticulture theory and application content presented to them in order for that student to become a positive member of the community. May teach horticulture classes, including lecture-only subjects and/or lecture subjects with hands-on lab sessions.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Collaborate with lead faculty to design and/or choose course content and assessment.
  2. Maintain student and course records.
  3. Maintain and file current course outlines, objectives and grading procedures for all courses.
  4. Exhibit innovative and adaptive instructional methods.
  5. Provide continuing education experiences for the community.
  6. Completes all mandatory training.
  7. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Position Qualification

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree in Horticulture or related field.


  • Must have educational qualifications to teach in the subject area or have documented specialty education/experience to meet tested experience requirements, as per the Higher Learning Commission's publication on Determining Qualified Faculty, and provide leadership in an academic discipline and/or degree program.
  • Must have three to five years of industry experience in the area(s) of instruction

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities Required:

  • Teaching Competence – Must be able to create lesson plans, content, presentations, ancillary materials, and assignments to effectively transform information to knowledge for students; have the ability to assess student learning and progress.
  • Communication skills – Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with clear, grammatically correct English. Requires interaction with supervisors, colleagues, students, using tact, discretion, and independent judgment.
  • Computer skills – Must be demonstrably proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel), as well as email, internet, and learning management systems (i.e., Canvas).
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated history of ethical and professional behavior.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in discipline or related area or Master's Degree with 18 hours in the discipline
  • Prefer experience using Canvas LMS
  • College-level teaching and online classroom management experience

Other Performance Measures:
Successful performance of the job requires creativity, initiative, and effective problem solving. An incumbent must use tact and diplomacy. Following department dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns are required.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include some evenings and weekends.
  • Work may be performed outdoors in typical environmental conditions (rain, heat, cold, wind) with appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Work will be performed in a classroom environment with a significant amount of public contact via email and various communication platforms.

Physical Requirements:

  • Duties require extended periods of sitting, talking, listening, and computer usage.
  • May require lifting up to 30 pounds. If an object weighs more than 45 pounds, OSU-Oklahoma City requires this to be a two-person lift.
