After successful completion of the probationary period, employee will receive off probation wage increase.


Summary:

Protect and restore the Oneida Nations natural areas including forests, prairies, and wetlands. Implement land-based restoration projects in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, ordinances and regulatory agencies.


Responsibilities:

* Apply for funding and manage a Contract to develop a Forest Management Plan and any other plans as needed/required by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and other federal agencies in order to participate in programs. 

  • a. Establish, implement, and communicate goals, objectives, policies, and procedures in accordance with Forest Management plan. b. Develop SOPs for all Habitat restorations maintenance program. 
  •  c. Contract out future Forestry maintenance activities such as timber volume and selection for sustainable harvest. 
  •  d. Work with NRCS liaison to enroll restorations in Federal Conservation Programs. Maintain records of contract length and deliverables of enrolled programs.

* Project manages the development, installation and maintenance of a variety of restorations including wetlands, prairie, and forestry. Manage related projects to include obtaining bids and proposals, negotiating contracts, and monitoring projects to ensure adherence to budget and time requirements and compliance with Oneida and Federal established policies, procedures, and regulations.


* Provide customer service, track and issue wood cutting permits in accordance with the Oneida Nation Woodcutting Ordinance.


* Provide technical assistance to other environmental staff, other departments, committees, groups and community members on programs and projects.


* Coordinate information and education programs regarding the Restoration program to include promotional materials, newsletters, and educational special events; stay abreast of new and emerging technologies.


* Represent the department and the Oneida Nation to external agencies, organizations, and individuals in all matters regarding Forestry initiatives, and establish solid relationships with programs of common interests.


* Maintain professional and technical knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.


* Seek additional funding and grant money for continuation and expansion of program services.


* Administer grant budgets, including tracking and monitoring program budgets, reporting and obtaining the appropriate approvals.

Skills:

Essential:
* Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines
* Knowledge of industry accepted arboricultural practices to effectively establish, maintain, and protect individual trees and shrubs
* Knowledge of urban forestry and arboricultural principles and practices as applied to planting care and maintenance of trees
* Knowledge and ability to diagnose tree and shrub diseases, infestations, corrective treatments and proper care procedures
* Knowledge of tree species and ability to identify trees and shrubs in our area
* Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing
* Skill in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operational and financial reports.
* Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, requirements, ordinances and legislation.
* Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds
* Ability to exercise independent judgment.
* Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements
* Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, document retrieval systems and database software programs in a Windows environment.
* Knowledge of the principles of environmental conservation and management as related to forestry, wetlands, prairies and other natural systems.
* Knowledge and use of accepted science and methodology used in effective restoration planning, maintenance and health tracking.
* Skills in providing excellent customer service in a stressful situation.
* Skill in budget preparation and administration.
* Ability to research and compile data relating to natural systems.
* Must have reliable internet access and technology skills in case of possible pandemic Oneida Nation Work from home orders.

* Bachelor's Degree in Natural Resources
* Bachelor's Degree in Wildlife Ecology & Management
* Bachelor's Degree in Forest Management
* Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Planning

* Driver's License Personal & Tribal Vehicle

Working conditions:

* Ability to use standard hand and power tools and equipment in forestry activities.
* Ability to work extended hours, various work schedules and to travel occasionally.

Must be willing and able to obtain additional related education and training.

Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and adhere to the Nation Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Policy.

A Tuberculosis (TB) Screening and/or a 2 step TB Skin Test is required within thirty (30) days of employment.
