Description

At NorthBay Health, The Manager, Ambulatory Nursing Education and Practice provides leadership and oversight for the clinical nursing practice and education functions in the ambulatory environment. This position ensures nursing care in all assigned clinics is consistent with the California Nurse Practice Act, professional nursing standards, and organizational policies. The Manager collaborates with business managers, medical directors, and advanced practice supervisors to integrate clinical and operational priorities that support quality outcomes, patient safety and experience, and staff development.

The Manager is responsible for nursing policy review and development, competency management, clinical education, and the interpretation of scope and standards of practice for all nursing and clinical support roles within ambulatory care. The Manager participates in performance evaluations by providing input on clinical practice and competency for nursing and clinical staff.

 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Clinical Practice and Professional Standards 

  1. Serves as the clinical authority and resource for nursing practice standards, policy interpretation, and scope-of-practice questions for RNs, LVNs, and MAs in the ambulatory setting.

  2. Develops, reviews, and maintains ambulatory nursing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with current regulations, evidence-based practice, and organizational standards.

  3. Collaborates with business managers and medical directors to ensure nursing care and workflows support safe, efficient, and patient-centered outcomes.

  4. Ensures adherence to clinical and professional standards established by the California Board of Registered Nursing, The Joint Commission, Title 22, and other applicable regulatory bodies.

  5. Provides consultation and oversight related to nursing practice issues, infection prevention, medication administration, and clinical safety in the ambulatory setting.

  6. Partners with the Ambulatory Nurse Educator(s) to assess and address staff learning needs, annual competencies, and onboarding programs.

  7. Promotes nursing professional development through mentorship, certification support, and educational opportunities aligned with organizational priorities.

  8. Participates in clinical quality, safety, and patient experience initiatives to advance ambulatory outcomes and patient experience.

  9. Supports evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement activities within the ambulatory environment.

Leadership and Collaboration 

  1. Collaborates closely with non-clinical business managers to provide clinical input on nursing and clinical support staff performance evaluations and development plans.

  2. Builds strong, collaborative relationships with medical directors, advanced practice provider supervisors, quality, infection prevention, and compliance leaders.

  3. Serves as a liaison between ambulatory operations and the hospital-based nursing structure to promote continuity of care and alignment of standards.

  4. Participates in committees and workgroups related to clinical operations, policy, quality, and patient safety.

  5. Engages and supports staff participation in shared governance, professional development, and quality initiatives.

  6. Demonstrates effective communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills to foster a positive and professional work environment.

 

Education and Competency Management 

  1. Oversees and collaborates on the planning, implementation, and evaluation of orientation, competency, and continuing education programs.

  2. Ensures all clinical staff maintain required licensure, certifications, and competencies appropriate to their role.

  3. Partners with educators and clinical experts to develop learning plans for new processes, technologies, and clinical practice changes.

  4. Promotes lifelong learning, professional growth, and advancement of nursing staff.

Operational Alignment

  1. Participates in the planning and review of budgets related to nursing education, professional development, and clinical operations in collaboration with the Director and business managers.
  2. Provides recommendations regarding clinical staffing models, supply utilization, and workflow efficiency.
  3. Participates in strategic planning for ambulatory nursing services and supports initiatives to expand clinical quality and access to care.
  4. Ensures a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

     


Qualifications

  1. Education: Bachelor's or higher degree in nursing required. Master's or higher degree in nursing or related healthcare field preferred.

  2. Licensure/Certifications:  Current California RN License. Current AHA or equivalent BLS required; current ACLS preferred. 

  3. Experience: Minimum of five years of nursing experience, with evidence of increasing responsibility and leadership in clinical practice, team development, or project management; formal supervisory experience preferred. Experience in ambulatory/outpatient nursing leadership preferred.

  4. Skills: Strong knowledge of ambulatory regulatory requirements, scope and standards of ambulatory nursing practice, quality improvement, and clinical policy development. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to effectively collaborate across departments and disciplines. Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic health record (EHR) systems.

  8. Compensation, annual base fixed range: $174K  - $ 187K   ( Max rate commensurate of 20 plus years in a clinical management role)
