Primary Purpose

The Railroad Clerk supports terminal operations by performing a wide range of administrative, operational, janitorial, and vessel coordination duties. This position is on-call and may be assigned to various shifts and responsibilities based on operational needs and union seniority.

 

Principal Duties

  • Answer customer questions and provide updates on ship schedules and activity.
  • Enter and confirm shipping orders; stay in contact with supervisors and customers.
  • Help coordinate when ships arrive, leave, and how they are loaded, based on instructions from ship personnel.
  • Use a radio to guide equipment operators during the loading of coal onto ships.
  • Keep track of tugboat service charges, delays, and shift activities; report this information as needed.
  • Create and share daily, shift, and monthly reports about ship movements, billing, and yard operations.
  • Handle billing for shipments and services; help correct any billing issues.
  • Keep records up to date for ships, customer agreements, and coal transfers.
  • Provide instructions and updates to yard supervisors and cargo staff.
  • Operate a movable bridge for boat traffic and communicate with dispatch when needed.
  • Perform cleaning tasks such as mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and washing windows at various terminal locations.
  • Deliver documents or messages as needed.
  • Work outside in all types of weather and move between different work areas as required.

 

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Effective communication skills, including use of radio equipment.
  • Basic computer and typing proficiency.
  • Ability to interpret and relay vessel loading instructions accurately.
  • Capable of performing heavy physical labor and janitorial tasks.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments.

Pay, Benefits, & Union Membership

  • Union Membership: Required with associated dues
  • Benefits Eligibility: Typically begins the first day of the calendar month following hire
  • Holiday Pay: Opportunity to qualify for up to 11 holidays per year
  • Paid Leave: Opportunity to qualify for paid sick leave and vacation after 1 year of service
  • Daily Wage: $372.25day (100% step rate)
    • For the first twelve (12) calendar months of employment, new employees shall be paid 85% of the applicable rates of pay 
    • For the second twelve (12) calendar months of employment, such employees shall be paid 90% of the applicable rates of pay \
    • For the third twelve (12) calendar months of employment, such employees shall be paid 95% of the applicable rate of pay. 
    • Employees who have had an employment relationship with the Carrier will be paid at established rates after completion of a total of thirty-six (36) months combined service.
