Job Overview:

Responsible for developing and sustaining educational experiences for newly licensed nurses. Have the ability to validate competencies needed for the new nurse.

Unit Overview:

The Inpatient Rehab Unit at Mercy Ardmore is a 20-bed unit that averages 11 patients per day.  We care for patients who have lost functional abilities due to illness or injury.  Our unit accepts patients of all ages over the age of 16, but most patients are 65 years and older.  The main diagnoses treated on Rehab are strokes, hip fractures, major multiple fractures, brain injuries, complicated joint replacements, debility caused by illness, and many other impairments.  Rehab patients are expected to be medically complex enough to need 24/7 nursing but well enough to tolerate 3 hours of physical/occupational/ and speech therapy per day.

Some of the procedures performed on the unit include but is not limited to:  medication administration, foley placement and care, IV placement and management, PEG tube management, PICC line management, functional scoring, wound care, and occasionally tracheostomy care.

Patients are generally on the unit an average of 12 days; therefore, there is an opportunity to bond and get to know patients very well.  Our team is like family, and the culture is positive.  Our patient satisfaction scores are usually higher than the nation's patient satisfaction scores.   The Rehab team consists of a Rehab physician, hospitalists, dieticians, pastoral care, case management, quality nurses, Rehab liaisons, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech pathologists.

One of our nurses stated: “I love working on Rehab because our work can determine if a patient gets to go home and resume normal life without having to rely on others to care for them.  The work we do is very rewarding.  Many of our patients come back to visit us who could not walk or care for themselves when they came in.  I love making a difference in their lives and allowing them to return to independent living.”
