General Summary of Position
Job Summary: 
MedStar Health is looking for a Surgical Assistant to join our team!  
As a Surgical Assistant, you will collaborate with the surgeon and the health care team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. The Surgical Assistant practices in collaboration with and at the surgeon's direction during the intra-operative experience. The Surgical Assistant may take a scrub role when not needed as a first assistant. The Surgical Assistant may: Handle tissue. Provide exposure. Use instruments. Suture. Provide homeostasis. With on-site supervision the Surgical Assistant may: Prepare and administer injections limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular (deltoid gluteal, vastus lateralis) to include small amounts of Local Anesthetic. Establish a peripheral intravenous line. The Surgical Assistant may access the patient's chart for pertinent information. However, they may not participate in auto-transfusions, inject/medicate a patient, participate in pre surgical or post op care of the patient.

Primary Duties: 
Functions as a Surgical Assistant. Anticipates next move in completion of patient's surgery 
Performs well with multiple instrumentation and equipment Assist in room set up and turn over.  
Responds to a constantly changing assignment professionally, Display safety consciousness in all Operating Room activities. Provides care in a compassionate caring manner. 
Assists other team members without being asked. Assist the Operating Room Leadership with cost effective methods in surgical procedures, participates in evaluations of products and their efficacy. 
Makes suggestions for process improvements. Makes recommendations for equipment/product standardization 

Qualifications:  
High School Diploma or GED. 
1-2 years' experience of proficiency in the role of a surgical technologist for major surgeries.  
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). 
Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical First Assist. 
CST - Certified Surgical Technologist preferred. 
1-2 years' successful experience as a CST/CFA F preferred.
