General Summary of Position
Lead a team of expert nurses supporting critical care across the region's largest hospital.
MedStar Washington Hospital Center — a Magnet®-recognized academic medical center and the largest hospital in the nation's capital — is seeking an experienced Nursing Manager (RN) to lead our Float Pool team. This leadership role oversees the Emergency Department and ICU float pool service lines, encompassing approximately 65–80 highly skilled nurses who provide coverage across critical care and emergency areas.
About the Role
As part of MedStar Health's nursing leadership team, the Nursing Manager – Float Pool provides 24-hour oversight and coordination of staffing operations, ensuring safe, high-quality nursing care across multiple service lines. This position combines operational leadership with clinical excellence, playing a vital role in optimizing workforce utilization, maintaining readiness, and advancing nursing practice standards throughout the organization.
Key Responsibilities
· Provide strategic oversight of float pool operations for the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit service lines, ensuring appropriate coverage and responsiveness to patient care needs.
· Monitor and evaluate the quality of nursing care delivered by float pool staff, ensuring compliance with evidence-based practices, regulatory standards, and organizational policies.
· Conduct clinical audits and collaborate with quality and safety teams to address patient safety events, develop corrective action plans, and promote best practices.
· Serve as a clinical resource and mentor, guiding float pool nurses in complex patient care and ethical decision-making.
· Partner with unit and service line leaders to address practice gaps, enhance competency, and align float pool performance with system goals.
· Develop and deliver targeted in-service education and professional development programs, supporting ongoing growth, certification, and specialty training.
· Actively participate in shared governance councils, advocating for float pool nurses and promoting evidence-based practice and staff engagement.
· Lead or contribute to quality improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and nurse satisfaction.
· Analyze metrics related to staffing, patient outcomes, and safety to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.
· Champion initiatives that support Magnet® recognition, patient safety, and nursing excellence across the organization.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Nursing required; Master's degree in Nursing or a related health field preferred.
Experience:
Minimum 5–7 years of nursing experience, with at least 1–2 years in a leadership or management role.
Demonstrated experience in critical care or emergency services strongly preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
Active RN license in the District of Columbia
CPR (AHA or Red Cross) required; specialty certification in Nursing Administration or clinical specialty within 2 years of hire.
