General Summary of Position
The Transporter supports the Manager and staff by performing the following duties; Responsible for the timely courteous and competent transportation of patients throughout MedStar National Rehabilitation Network (MNRN) and MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) complexes via wheelchair stretcher or bed. He/she will also perform a variety of other support services functions as needed to provide service excellence to patients visitors and hospital team members.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Transports patient his/her personal possessions medical records and attached clinical devices (IV's and oxygen) by wheelchair stretcher bed etc. to and from various hospital locations and to the hospital entrance upon discharge.
- Ensures the safety of the patient during transport and alerts nursing staff immediately to any signs of patient distress or unfavorable symptoms.
- Ensures the comfort of the patient by being attentive offering blankets checks modesty and engagement of appropriate conversation with the patient/assists in the lifting positioning and transferring patient to and from examination tables wheelchairs stretchers and /or beds.
- Provides lift team support as assigned. Assures that patient is comfortable and securely fastened and provides gowns pillows/blankets to patients.
- Ensures that patient has hospital identification band corresponding with name and transportation record.
- Wears appropriate protective clothing as needed.
- Documents arrival and departure times and informs appropriate staff of patient destination location and or time of arrival
- Delivers and retrieves supplies equipment and records e.g. laboratory specimens results x-ray film unit supplies medical charts pharmacy products parcels and messages.
- Maintains associated transportation records including name of patient or material transported pickup site destination and departure/ arrival times and notes difficulties encountered and relays to supervisor.
- Inspects transportation equipment for damage and/or defects.
- Cleans transportation equipment by wiping surfaces with pre-mixed cleaning solutions. reports damaged or malfunctioning transport equipment as required to service manager and or logs work request and tags and removes equipment from service.
- Retrieves clean linen and dispose of soiled linen.
- Restrains patients as directed by holding or strapping with appropriate constraints.
- Completes transports quickly and efficiently; immediately notifies dispatcher when assignments are initiated completed and when paged by dispatcher.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
Experience
- Less than 1 year 6 months of experience transporting patients in a hospital setting. preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- The ideal candidate will have a passion for customer service and maintain a professional and courteous manner at all times while interacting with patients family members/caregivers and hospital staff.
- The Incumbent must be detail oriented and be able to identify safety risks before during and after transport and be attentive and patient with the subject of transport.
This position has a hiring range of
USD $18.00 - USD $29.74 /Hr.
