General Summary of Position
Supervises department activities and maintains standard of quality plans directs and supervises all technical aspects of the ultrasound department in regard to services programs and evaluations of such programs. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department and for making work assignments to accommodate the work requirements. Performs diagnostic ultrasound examination for subsequent evaluation by radiologist and treatment by attending physician.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Participates in inter or intra departmental performance improvement.
  • Skillfully perform all ultrasound techniques and examinations abdominal scans retroperitoneal scans obstetrics and gynecology scans non-invasive arterial venous and carotid exams and minor surgical procedures (ex. Cyst aspirations and biopsies) on all patients.
  • Clearly explains the procedure to the patient and answers any questions they may have concerning their exam.
  • Carefully transfers and positions the patient on the table.
  • Utilizes infection control guidelines pertinent to the Ultrasound department.
  • Routinely obtains complete clinical history and gathers pertinent clinical data.
  • Accurately selects proper technical factors on an individual basis.
  • Selects and operates equipment as prescribed.
  • Competently performs radiographic procedures as required.
  • Effectively maintains supplies stocks and materials.
  • Efficiently assists the physician in administration of medications. Consistently schedules cases to coordinate with other patient examinations.
  • Skillfully evaluates ultrasound technologists; counsels and/or recommends disciplinary action. Effectively provides in-service activities; trains and arranges for continuing education.
  • Routinely schedules ultrasound technologists for work shifts holidays and on-call coverage. Proficiently schedules and enforces parameters of patients recommended for ultrasound exams; coordinates and prioritizes work flow.
  • Carefully reviews sonograms taken by junior ultrasound technologists and determines whether they are of optimum qualify for radiologist interpretation.Regularly maintains ultrasound services in accordance with standards established by the hospital and with state local and federal standards which may apply keeping equipment and supplies in clean and operating order.
  • Efficiently delegates appropriate responsibility to designated staff. Consistently coordinates services for contracted sub-departments.
  • Routinely participates in decisions of purchase of equipment and supplies. Expertly recommends changes and improvements relating to service staffing operations and expansion.
  • Periodically meets with medical staff and administration as necessary. Reliably represents ultrasound at institutional and external agency and organizational meetings and activities.
  • Routinely arranges for service and preventive maintenance on equipment. Responsible for Performance Improvement input and reports for the Ultrasound department.
  • Routinely reviews health physicist reports. Carefully lifts moves and transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher as needed.
  • Works weekends holidays and on call as required. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • Graduate of AMA approved school of Radiographic Technology as well as an accredited school of Medical Ultrasound Technology. required
    Experience
    • Competency in professional practice in supervisory skills as appropriate in the practice of diagnostic medical sonography. preferred
    Licenses and Certifications
    • Certification by accredited school of ultrasound. (ARRT and ARDMS) required and
    • Licensed by the State of Maryland required

    • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
    • Ability to read write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.

    • Knowledge skill and ability to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to change in a positive and cooperative manner. Adjust to peaks in workload with staff.
    • Perform duties in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision or direction.
    • Ability to offer and act on constructive feedback. Contribute to a cohesive group relationship use open communication to identify and resolve problems in and between the departments.
    • Ability to make suggestions for improvements to procedures or innovations to enhance patient service.
    • Knowledge skill and ability to utilize correctly all diagnostic ultrasound devices and equipment.

    This position has a hiring range of

    USD $41.98 - USD $75.62 /Hr.
